Clifton LaRoy Bates, 83, of Highland Springs, went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 11, 2025, after a battle with Parkinson's and Dementia.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 18, 2025, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 South Laburnum Avenue, Richmond, VA 23231, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Please dress casual. Online condolences may be left at www.nelsenrichmond.com.

To the Bates family, Sorry for your loss. I met Clifton many years ago at Walkers Gym, then the YMCA, then Results Fitness in New Kent. I was a powerlifter for 25 years and Clifton was never at a loss for words when it came to my technique, lifting form, eating habits, etc. He was always mentoring to the young ones about powerlifting. He always had a smile on his face and was full of gym knowledge. He will be missed.

My sincere condolences to the Bates family. Laroy will be missed. I met Laroy at Mike's Gym many years ago. We became friends at the gym and went to many Nascar races. I will personally miss him. Rest in peace Laroy (not Leroy).

Met Leroy when he was related to my first wife, Lea Bates Turner. And Pop Bates with the Post Office. Everyone in Highland Springs knew Leroy. Great guy!
