Joseph M. Johnson & Son Funeral Home - McKenney Obituary

Command Sergeant Major Carlos Monte Evans, 38, from Petersburg, VA , was born on September 15, 1984 to Johnny Dabney and Angelia Evans. He departed this life on March 21, 2023.

CSM Evans matriculated through Petersburg Public School System, graduating from Petersburg High School (class of 2002). He decided to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Army. CSM Evans served in various capacities - progressing, growing, and taking others with him during his illustrious career, which began July 2, 2002. It was during this time as a young soldier that he met the love of his life, Alfreida Jenkins and thereafter entered into holy matrimony on October 11, 2005. To this union, their beautiful daughter, Journey Sanaa, was born.

Over the course of his military career, CSM Evans traveled and served on tours in Iraq, Kuwait, and Korea; completed a substantial amount of fieldwork while leaving his family behind; and served his country in many states. The Evans family journeyed together through the hills, valleys, and deserts of Georgia, Kentucky, New York, two assignments in Texas, and had settled at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina.

He was proven to be a dedicated, hardworking, and loyal man in work and deed, having been decorated with the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Valor, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign with Medal Campaign Star, Global War Against Terror Expeditionary and Service Medals, Kuwait Defense Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Expert Marksmanship Badge-Rifle.

CSM Evans has quite an extensive educational background to include: Associates of Arts, General Studies, 2010, Central Texas College; Bachelor of Science, Organizational 2016, Thomas Edison State College (Arnold Fletcher Awards Recipient); Masters of Science, Leadership (Summa Cum Laude), 2019, Trident University International, and is Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certified. He was also pursuing his Doctor of Strategic Leadership through Libery University.

In 2021, Command Sgt. Maj. Carlos Evans joined the US Army Central Team as the Command Sergeant Major for the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion. He was heralded as a leader and friend by all who knew him.

CSM Evans began and ended his life with Christ, joining his grandmother’s Pentecostal church at a young age, and carrying his faith with him over the course of his career. He enjoyed participating in ministry and playing the bass and drums. It was through Christ that he met his family, Bishop Irving
and Lady Stephanie Taylor and their children, and continued his life journey with his wife Alfreida, his daughter Journey and the Taylor Family, until his [untimely] passing.

Aside from his military career, he loved spending time with his beautiful family. Carlos, Alfreida, and Journey, as well as extended family, enjoyed traveling, spending quality time, movie nights, game nights, music, and meals. Carlos greatest gift on earth was his daughter. They had an unbreakable Father/Daughter bond. Beyond their physical resemblances, they shared a love of creating art, making videos, and most of all their passion for music. He was her music.

Carlos was a wonderful cook, and loved to dote on his wife by preparing exquisite dishes for her. He also loved returning to his hometown to visit his family and make memories by spending quality time with those he loved. His mom (Stephanie) is known for her decorations, and she reveled in Carlos returning for Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays so that they could decorate her trees and throughout the house for the holidays.

Carlos was a gentle soul who provided wise counsel and loved friends and family, alike. One would be hard pressed to find a person who didn’t love him, enjoy his presence, and bask in the energy that he could bring to a room. While he was humble, his presence was commanding and impactful to his community.

Carlos had a special love for animals, and adopted dogs over the years, many of whom would have likely been overlooked otherwise. He gave love and shelter to Chester, the BDE mascot, took in the tiny talker Marley, and found his bestie in Bear, the gentle giant. Each pup held a special place and Marley and Bear have grieved this loss with the rest of the family.

He was preceded in death by his father; Johnny Dabney and his grandmother; Brenda Kelly.

He leaves to cherish the fond memories that 17 years of marriage brings, his loving and faithful wife; Mrs. Alfreida D. Evans; his sweet Princess, Journey; his (Family of origin/his biological mother) Angelia; his brother Jamarr Devon Evans, his uncle Doug Evans; aunts Antoinette Evans and Deanna E. Green, all of Richmond, VA; his Mom and Dad; Bishop Irving and Lady Stephanie Taylor of Prince George, VA; his brothers Adrian (Angenia) of Sandston, VA; Brandon of Prince George, VA and sister Chanell of Prince George, VA, brother; Charles Harrison III (Leah) of Matoaca, VA; three nephews
and two nieces. He also leaves a host of friends, classmates, and military personnel in which he’s left an indelible impression, having served in some capacity that impacted lives for 21 years.
