Courtney Paddock Obituary

Paddock, Courtney Prettyman
Courtney Prettyman Paddock, 90, died December 12, 2009 at Evanston Hospital, Evanston, IL of complications from a stroke. Her husband, George A. Paddock, Jr., preceded her in death. She and her husband lived in Evanston, after her move from Washington, DC following her marriage. Mrs. Paddock, born in Washington, DC, was the daughter of Lucy Hill Prettyman and E. Barrett Prettyman, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. The federal courthouse in Washington is named after her father. Mrs. Paddock graduated from the National Cathedral School (Washington, DC) and from Wellesley College, and received an M.A. from Stanford University. During World War II, she worked in the U.S. State Department in the office of Dean Acheson, and served in the European Theater Operation (ETO) with the American Red Cross. She worked for 10 years with the CIA in Washington before her marriage to George Paddock, of Evanston. She was active in St. Mark's Episcopal Church (Evanston), in Wellesley College alumnae organizations, and on Northwestern University Settlement's Evanston board. She served as president of the Visiting Nurse Association in Evanston, and was a member of the Fortnightly of Chicago, of Westmoreland Country Club and of the Dancing Club of Evanston. She was one of the founders of the Addison's Disease Support Group for Northern Illinois. She is survived by her brother, E. Barrett (Noreen) Prettyman, Jr.; a nephew, E. Barrett "Ty" Prettyman, III; and a niece, Jill Prettyman Lukoschek. A memorial service was held Wednesday, December 16 at the Elliott Chapel of the Presbyterian Home, Evanston. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 1509 Ridge Ave., Evanston, IL 60201 or a charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements by Wm. H.
