Dan, I just found out. I am at a loss for words. That's the word loss. I'm sorry I've been so out of touch. It's hard for me to wrap my brain around this that you are really gone. You know, I always thought that I'd see you again - I truly did. I'm not going to think of you as gone because you will be with all of us forever. I'm going to think of you as on some wonderful adventure, having a fabulous time. You will always be thought of as a kind & good man & one of the best. My heart & prayers are with your family & your friends & with you, Dan. With a big hug & kiss & a great big smile & with thanks & love, Carrie

Clark and Jean Hale

May 1, 2015

So hard to believe that Dan is no longer with us--our heartfelt sympathies to all the family members. Lots of great memories and laughs growing up as the "oldest cousins" growing up on the prairie. Dan always had a great joy for life and people. Jean and I were traveling through the Cortez area the day before Dan's service and passed by Crow Canyon, the area he loved so much. Dan is one of those men who truly made a difference in so many lives and will be sorely missed but fondly remembered.

I'll remember your thoughtful talks,
Gentlemanly ways, your healing touch,
Hale like a shaman's trust in bear medicine.

I'll remember your devotion to duty,
To the gut of a thing (you hear hearts wailing),
Guiding people towards a sliver of blue sky
Bared by the cut of your butterfly wings.

I'll remember your gorgeous eyes like a slow sunrise
Welcoming people's birthdays with your raw light,
Your genuine joy while you josh away like

a prank-pulling boy under a prying moon lit
Clean through a cold northern wind calling
Ya eh teh, native son of the west, ya eeh teh

Yes, I'll remember you.

Our families prayers to the Hale family. It is unfortunate that I never was able to spend more time with him. When I did see him he was always kind and willing to impart his knowledge, and share his experiences with me. A good man that will be missed by many.

My condolences to Dan's family and to all the Hales. I always wished growing up, we could have spent more time with the other side of the Hale family... I remember Dan first for his humor, he was an incredible tease, but he treated us young people with real respect and he was great fun. I remember later as the man who officiated at my wedding. A true gentleman, he was eloquent and full of dignified wisdom. I will really miss him. I can't believe he is gone.

I met Dan before he became a judge and I was always amazed at how wide his interests were. We shared an interest in ancient cultures and the canyon country. He found time to do many things outside of his profession, which could be why he did that so well. I miss Dan. Condolences to his family and friends.

I grew up with Danny as his family were neighbors. Danny was extremely intelligent and very personable. The times we spent together were always a fun time because he could always make any situation lighter. We would at times call him Cudmore. What a loss to the world. Tim Hogan

There are very few times in one's life when someone touches your heart in incredible ways. Through his wit, kindness, love of nature and friendship he touched mine. We met in 2002 when we experienced the Albert Potter site at Crow Canyon. He has been my "digging partner" since then. I am honored to have been his friend. I will miss Dan immensely.

Every summer I looked forward to Dan's arrival at Crow Canyon. He, Lilly and I excavated together many years ago and we continued to be friends ever since. Mark Varien was right when he said Dan came out of the field so dirty that you couldn't tell who he was, .....except for his smile. Dan we will definitely miss you, your humor and your smile.

I worked with Dan only once, on one case, many years ago. But I've never forgotten him. I'm sorry for your loss.

I got to know Dan when he helped with our archaeological research at the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center; he participated in our field excavations every year between 2002 and 2014. Like everyone else who knew him, I was so impressed by his intelligence, integrity, and kindness. Everyone at Crow Canyon who worked with Dan--both the staff and his fellow participants--loved him, and we are all deeply saddened by his passing. Dan became a first-rate field archaeologist, and the staff saved especially important and difficult contexts for him to excavate each year because he was so talented and because he worked so hard! And the dirt loved Dan too: I have never seen anybody come out of the field so covered in dirt as Dan! We'll miss you Dan and cherish the memories of our times together.

Dan touched my life in several ways - I am shocked - and having tried cases against him and in front of him I can only reiterate others' comments. There are other personal impacts on my life and I think of Dan often and will miss him greatly. Nick Wimmershoff

Dan was a great person and a great friend. He officiated our wedding in Kentucky of all places and did so graciously and without asking for anything in return. He was honestly one of the kindest people I've known. Dan will be missed.

I first met Dan Hale in 1972, when Dan was in the Boulder DA's Office. He was one of the most fair human beings I have ever met.

Dan Hale was my judge in one of the first personal injury jury cases he tried on the Boulder bench. Very smart, but without the ego. Unassuming and compassionate. Dan honestly cared and it showed to all who knew him.

I always described Dan to others as a very human being.

I was so very sorry to hear of Dan's passing. He always served Boulder County with honesty, fairness and compassion. He was an excellent representative for his clients, when he was a a public Defender. He served the County as a fair and impartial Assistant DA, and then became one of the best Judges Boulder County has had. A good man lost too soon. Thank you Dan. Peace to his family. Lynn Imig

I will miss Dan so much. Throughout his time at Judicial Arbiter Group, he became a friend and I respect him so much. We will miss you Judge. Such a wonderful lawyer, amazing judge, fair and compassionate, kind and caring person. My thoughts and prayers go out. The world lost a very good man yesterday.
