Darryl Webb Obituary

TUSCALOOSA Dr. Darryl Lee Webb, age 76, died on November 11, 2018.
He was preceded in death by his beloved grandson, Jeffrey Todd Webb, Jr.; parents, Mr. and Mrs. James E. Webb (Ada Mae Lee); two brothers, James Roger Webb and Lamar Webb; and his sister Christine Webb Horton.
He is survived by his devoted and beloved wife of 56 years, Connie Self Webb; sons, Jeffrey Todd Webb (Rhonda Ramsey Webb) and Lee Alexander Webb; daughter, Alyson Marie Webb (Timothy Mathews); and granddaughters, Ramsey Lee Webb and Myriah E. Wilder-Harton; grandson Jalone D. Matthews; his sister Betty Webb McDaniel; his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Margaret Garges Webb, C. Douglas "Bud" and Karla Self, Daniel and Karla Self, Michael and Lisa Self, and Vicki Self Bailey and George Bruno; and many dear nieces, nephews and cousins.
Darryl was born December 6, 1941, in Langdale, Ala., and graduated from Valley High School in 1960. At Valley High School, he served as Beta Club President, voted Wittiest; and played football and basketball. He attended Howard College in Birmingham (now Samford University). At Howard College, he served as Pledge Class President of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He also met his future wife, Connie Self, in a Sociology Class, which became a classic family story. They were married on September 1, 1962, and were devoted to one another for 56 years. After completing his undergraduate degree in History, Darryl enrolled in Cumberland School of Law at Howard, and graduated with a Juris Doctorate degree in 1967. Following graduation, Darryl formed a law partnership in Birmingham with classmates and established the firm, Corley, Church, and Webb.
In 1971, Darryl took a position at the University of Alabama's College of Commerce and Business Administration, as an assistant legal studies professor. This position would define his career until his retirement from the University in 2005. During those years, Darryl also served as the Assistant Dean of Students Affairs and Chair of the Legal Studies section in the College of Commerce and Business Administration, and also taught in the Executive MBA program. For many years, he also served enthusiastically as one of the faculty recruiters for the Crimson Tide football team.
In the course of his long career, Darryl taught thousands of students, and always wanted to know where they were from and where they had gone to high school. He always infused his classes and teaching with a witty sense of humor and good-natured jokes. During his tenure at the University, Darryl received many awards and recognitions and was inducted into many campus organizations, including Jason's Men's Honor Society and ODK, and served in the Faculty Senate and was also a faculty advisor for Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and his own fraternity Pi Kappa Phi. Darryl wrote many textbooks, all related to legal studies and business law which were used on college campuses across the country. He was a fifty year member of the Alabama Bar Association.
Darryl was known by many names, Dr. Webb, Dean Webb, Pop, and "Doc". He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he was a lifetime Deacon, taught Sunday School in the College Department, and was a member of the Guyton Fellowship Class. He was a past member of the Tuscaloosa Kiwanis Club and a long time member of the University Club, where his favorite dessert was their famous almond ball. His kind, congenial warmth and happiness were contagious to all who knew and loved him. Darryl never met a stranger and loved nothing more than to engage in lighthearted conversation with everyone he encountered-whether a lifelong friend or a new acquaintance. Whether playing golf with his beloved Woodland Forrest Country Club and Tall Pines Golf groups, or following his much loved Crimson Tide, Darryl was always fun to be around and loved life immensely.
He was a devoted husband, son, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle who deeply loved his family and God and his Savior Jesus Christ. He was blessed to have many loving friends and will be missed by all who knew him.
Pallbearers will be his brother-in-law Daniel L. Self, nephew Bryan Chad Bailey, former student Montoya Madden, and his three devoted caregivers Khembe C. Bishop, De'Andre Nash, and James E. Matthews, Jr. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Guyton Fellowship Class of Calvary Baptist Church and members of the Tall Pines Golf Club, LLC.
A memorial service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church Friday, November 16, 2018, at 11 am, following a visitation with the family at 9:30 am at the church. Following the service, there will be a graveside service at Memory Hill Gardens in Tuscaloosa.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages making a donation to the charity of one's choice.

Dr. Webb was THE BEST!! I took two classes from him at The University of Alabama, in the College of Commerce and Business Administration. I learned so much from him about law and LIFE!! He was a genuine treasure!! His wit, knowledge, and practical advice was always spot-on!! He will be missed by so many!! I hold him in the highest esteem from my time in Tuscaloosa. May he rest peacefully!!

I just now found out about Dr. Webb's passing away. He was my Sunday School teacher in the college ministry at Calvary Baptist Church. And years later after I graduated from law school, he was kind enough to be one of my recommendations for the Alabama Bar Association. And years after that, he was kind enough to come to hear me sing during my Fall recital one year. He especially loved my "Oh Danny Boy" and I can still hear him saying that he taught me well! Hee, hee! He was a delightful person to know and very brilliant. He will be missed by many.

Darryl was a longtime friend from the UA Culverhouse School of Commerce from where we both retired in recent years. He contacted me recently on Facebook to become a FB friend to him. I did and we've enjoyed a fun and interesting renewed friendship ever since. We had some great memories from years past there and mutual friends. Darryl was a good man, full of fun, and someone I enjoyed knowing over the years. We would all do well to have his fun and love of life.

Darryl had the office next to mine in Alston Hall for 15 years from the time it opened until he retired. When my wife and I still lived in Woodland Forrest (until 2001) I sometimes gave him a ride home when a car was in the shop.

He was a wonderful colleague and a great office neighbor. Academics can frequently be full of petty rivalries, but Darryl never had anything to do with that. He was always cheerful and good natured and it is obvious his students adored him. Indeed, that was the only downside to being his neighbor; there was always a line of students waiting to see him, so it was a noisy neighborhood.

I never got to meet his family, but I wish you all the best and want you to know how much I missed Darryl when he retired.

Best teacher I ever had. He taught me about legal work, but his best teaching was about life. Thanks so much Dr. Webb.

When someone we love falls asleep in death the memories we have of them become our treasure, may those cherished memories of a life well lived and Gods promise at John 6:40 bring you a measure of comfort. My condolences to the family.
