David Critzer Obituary

David Norwood Critzer, 83, of Afton passed away Friday, January 19, 2007, at Birch Gardens Assisted Living Facility in Fishersville, Virginia.

He was born March 23, 1923, in Nelson County.

In addition to his parents, C.B. and Pearl Critzer, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Buster and Jack; and a sister, Ethel.

He is survived by his wife of over 59 years, Effie; his sister, Agnes Fox; and brother, Bill Critzer; and three children, Dave "Butch" Critzer and his wife, Penny, of Waynesboro, Darlene Morris and her husband, Dan, of Barboursville and Dinah Small and her husband, Rudy, of Nellysford; and four grandchildren, Chris Critzer and Jennifer, D. Alan Morris, David Morris, Jaime Small; and two great-grandchildren, Logan Critzer and Drake Morris.

Dave was a skilled corduroy cutter at the former Crompton Manufacturing Plant in Waynesboro for over 37 years, retiring in 1985. Dave served in the United States Army in World War 11, seeing action in France, Germany and Holland; earning the bronze star. He was a member and lay leader at Rodes United Methodist Church in Afton and as active supporter of the church's programs and is listed in Who's Who in the Methodist Church. Dave was a member of the Woodmen of the World and held several offices in the local chapter.

Dave was known for never saying no to anyone needing help and was always gentle with his words. He will be greatly missed, especially by all those that he touched along the way.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, January 22, 2007, at Rodes United Methodist Church in Afton with the Reverend Richard McDowell officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Michael Cook, Robert C. Fox Jr., Richard Martin, Dennis Critzer, Larry D. Hughes and M.C. Small.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kenny Lee, Buddy Dulaney, Dr. Robert Raynor, grandchildren and friends of Rodes United Methodist Church.

The family thanks all the medical professionals, caregivers and the Hospice of Shenandoah who helped make his last days as comfortable as possible. Notes and cards may be sent to Effie at home, 188 Pounding Branch Road, Afton, VA 22920.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday, January 21, 2007, at Reynolds Funeral Service of Waynesboro.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Rockfish Valley Fire Department and Rescue Squad at 11000 Rockfish Valley Hwy., Afton, VA 22920.
