Joy and I will never forget how caring David was to us when we attended his grief counseling class after the loss of our son. A truly gentle soul who offered us hope at a difficult time. He will be remembered for his gentleness and graciousness and he will greatly missed by all who knew him.

Derek, I feel as though I have met you and your father through my Aunt, Jewel Harrison, of Nitro, West Virginia. She has expressed how much she enjoyed the two of you seeing her last year and discussing the extended Gibson clan. She called yesterday and told me of your dad's passing. Please know, our family's prayers are with you. After reading the obituary, I was struck by two items. The first involved Jerry West, whom graduated from the same East Bank High School as my mother. The second was your dad's favorite poem, Trees by Kilmer. It was my dad's favorite as well. Both were comforting to read since both passed away years ago. Your dad's kindness and service to the Lord is well noted by others, but most assuredly by our Savior, Jesus Christ. Sincerely,Lynn (Gibson) StickleyOrlando, FL

A fine man and one of my very favorite professors. I always liked to think that my own teaching style was influenced by Dr. Martin. I am so glad that his son and mine went through school together and became good friends. Love to you, Derrick, at this difficult time.

I remember when David ran for Student Body President at David Lipscomb College in the Spring of 1960. He campaigned under the banner of Ollie the Owl.

Thoughts and prayers with the family and friends during this time on behalf of my family and Derek's co-workers. Great note about guarding Jerry West back in the day too.

Although I only had him for one class, David was one of my favorite, most memorable professors at Lipscomb. I also knew him when I attended Otter Creek in the 70s, and I even "played" him in a skit (written by Brad Forrister) at one of our fellowship dinners. Great man.

I am honored to join with David's family and friends to plan our service to celebrate David's life. The class David led at Otter Creek Church (he was present just two weeks ago tonight) began tonight's session with stories and special memories. Thanks to David for leading our discussion for several years!
