I was a graduate student in Sociology at UNO about 30 years ago. Dr. Maurer was someone I could always count on to listen and offer sound advice. Rip sir.

This is a picture of the last time we saw David. It was Christmas Day 2019. We always looked forward to seeing David at Christmas. David seemed happy and full of life this year and positive in his outlook. It is so shocking and sad that he is no longer with us. We loved David and will miss him and keep him in our hearts forever. We are so sorry for Lisa, Christopher, JoAnn, Danielle, Emile and Josie. You have our deepest sympathy for you loss. We love you all and wish we could be there with you to remember David. As others have said, David was a true New Orleans character with a wonderfully quirky sense of humor and a brilliant mind. We hope David is at peace. May God bless David and the Maurer family. We are with you in spirit. We love you.

Joann and Danielle,
Please accept my prayers and sympathy on David's death. I have fond memories of sharing an office with David during our years as adjunct faculty at Tulane's Soci. Dept. I always enjoyed catching up with him between classes. Our families shared roots in the French Quarter. May he rest in peace.
Sincerely,
Rhoda V. Carr

I did not know David, but I wish I had. That was the best obit I have ever read. I cut it out the paper so when I do go back to work I can show my coworkers. I am so sorry for your loss but what a blessing he was inspite of his illness. God Bless you all!

Joann and Danielle, I am so sorry for your loss. David and I shared the joy of Music. If, as L.V.Beethoven said, Music is the language of God, then David surely has God's ear.

We loved David. He and my cousin Joann were childhood sweethearts, so its hard to remember a time before David was part of our family. As young married couples, we spent a lot of time together going to their favorite New Orleans eateries along with second hand record and book stores. We shared disappointments at Saints games and enjoyed delicious family Sunday dinners. Time passed and the job moved us many times, but we always looked forward to catching up. David loved his books, music, and the city of New Orleans but most of all, he loved his childhood sweetheart and his daughter Dani. Our hearts go out to Joann, Dani and the rest of the family, but especially to his parents, Josie and Emile. David was an New Orleans original and we will miss him. Kathleen and Bill

David, I adored you. You are the one who took me to my first concert, thus inspiring my lifelong love of music; the one whose incredible wit and outrageous behavior could cause me to erupt into uncontrolled fits of laughter; the one whose fall into addiction broke my heart and the hearts of all who loved you. Rest well now, David, and have a sno-cone with Ro-titi.

Mr. David always showed me kindness and took interest in what I was pursuing. Ill never forget our lengthy conversation when he found out I was going to law school. He took the time to share his experiences with me, provide me with tips and insight, and reassure me that it was going to be fine. He was a true gem. Sending you all love.

I check the obits everyday to make sure I am not in it. Obits are needed and usually they are so sad because they are. I did enjoy reading this one it gave me a smile. Sounds like a he was a fun person. Saying a Prayer for Family and Friends. Remember the great fun times. God Bless

David always made you laugh with his dry wit and humor. Even in death, we that knew and loved him can get a laugh from this obituary. David called me crying the day my son died and left a message on my phone that I still have to this day. He was caring and loving when his spirit allowed him to be so. I don't ever remember David saying a bad thing about any person. He will be missed and is finally at peace with his mind and body. I was a little girl when he was born and I remember visiting his Mother, (my godmother) and she and Emile were crying because they didn't know if he would make it due to early birth. Well, he did and now they are crying again. It is so very sad. Rest in Peace my special friend!

Hope everyone enjoys his obit; I know he would. I met David 15 years ago but it felt like we were friends my entire life. A great humanitarian. He always gave me sound advise with no judgment. I could not have asked for a better friend. I truly loved him.

May you find peace and rest in the Lord. A unique obit for a unique and special man. Our prayers for Emile, Josie, Lisa, and Christopher. We all grew up in a different time...what a ride!
