DAVID MILLER

MILLER--David Wendell, Professor Emeritus of Columbia University's Uris Graduate School of Business, died peacefully in his home in New York City on June 10th. He was 86. During his 36-year tenure at Columbia Professor Miller taught statistics and many courses in quantitative methods. He served as a consultant to major firms including IBM and Morgan Guaranty Trust and served as the Director of Graduate Studies at the Uris Business School. He was totally devoted to his students earning him the status as "legend." Professor Miller, along with his colleague Martin Starr, wrote the seminal textbook, Executive Decisions and Operations Research, which was translated into sixteen languages for use around the world. In addition, he was the author and co-author with his wife of technical and historical works in quantitative methods. His latest two-volume work, Everyday Arguments and the Theory of Argumentation, was published last year. Professor Miller was a visiting professor in many countries including Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Tunisia, Namibia, Zimbabwe and England. During the Second World War he served as a code-breaker with the United States Army at Arlington Farms. Professor Miller is survived by his wife, Lisa Evered Miller, his two children, Rachael and Jason, from a previous marriage to Renee Rubin and a granddaughter, Vivian. Friends may call at the Riverside Memorial Chapel at 76th Street and Amsterdam Ave. from 2-5pm on Sunday, June 13th. A memorial service will be held on a future date at St. Paul's Chapel, Columbia University. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of NY Hospice Care.
