David Murday Obituary

David Edward Murday

January 9, 2025

Columbia, South Carolina - A Memorial Mass for David Edward Murday, 70, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 25, 2025 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 24, 2025, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Dr. Murday died unexpectedly Thursday, January 9, 2025. Born in Fort Meade, Maryland, he was a son of the late Col. Stanley James and Beatrice Sarah (Endebrock) Murday.

He received his Ph.D. in Community Psychology from the University of South Carolina (USC) in 1983. Dave began his career as Director of the Medical, Military, and Municipal Committee at the SC House of Representatives. He then served as the Director of Research for the Joint Legislative Health Care Planning and Oversight Committee.

In 1995 Dave joined USC as the Director of the Arnold School of Public Health Center for Health Services and Policy Research until 2009. He continued to serve the community through USC as the Director of the Evaluation and Quality Improvement core for the SC Clinical and Translational Research Institute at the Medical University. He continued his love of teaching and mentoring through the University until the time of his death.

Dave also taught religious education at St. Joseph Catholic Church for many years and was an active member of the Senior Life Council.

In addition to his community service, Dave loved playing tennis, kayaking, camping, hiking, skiing, barbequing, playing cards, frequenting the performing arts, and traveling the world, but most of all, he liked spending time with friends and family.

Dave was a loving father, son, brother, uncle, and friend.

Surviving are his daughters, Elspeth Snow Murday (Antonio Marques), Alanna Snow Murday (Michael T. Dimtsios); partner, Claire Prince; former wife, Deborah Snow; brothers and sisters, James Murday (Marcia), Kathleen Montgomery (Diane Brodnik), Robert Murday (Veronica), Patricia Couvillion (Steven), Thomas Murday, Richard Murday (Mary Curnane), Susan Wolfe (John), Judith Hyer (Mark), Linda Plunkett (John), Donald Murday (Dena), Michael Murday (Laura).

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Brain Injury Association of South Carolina, a cause to which Dave devoted much of his professional career.
