David W. Thompson

THOMPSON Lt. Col. DAVID WILKIN THOMPSON Of Fairfax, VA, age 91, passed away on July 31, 2010. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mildred Elizabeth (Joiner) Thompson. He will be dearly missed by his five surviving children, Sandra Lee (Thompson) Tisdale, Kristi Lee (Thompson) Rouillard, David Wilkin Thompson, Jr., Jeffrey Allen Thompson and Toni Annette (Thompson) Wyatt; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. David entered the Army Air Corps in February 1942. Later, during WWII, he piloted "The Duchess" a B-24 Liberator bomber that was shot down by enemy ground fire on February 25, 1944. He then became a Prisoner of War at Luft-Stalag-1 until war''s end. David received, earned or was awarded many Combat Air Medals complete with clusters, including the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross. David, after he retired from the Air Force, then worked for NASA, and he eventually retired after 20 years of service. After retirement, he became a member of the Air Force Memorial Foundation. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 21, from 10 to 11 a.m. with Funeral Services at 11 a.m. the Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Rd., Springfield, VA. Interment, with Military Honors, to follow at The Arlington National Cemetery at 2 p.m. The family requests that, donations in lieu of flowers, be made to the American Cancer Society, in memory of David Wilkin Thompson.
