Dear Don: Hard to believe it's been three years since you passed away, and on my birthday, for pete's sake! We were about as close as two guys can be; college roommates, fraternity brothers, fellow scientists, fishermen, best-men at weddings, wine enthusiasts, and too infrequently, house guests from across the country. My wife Phyllis and I think of you and your family often, recalling some crazy event or another that we had shared at the outset. Now, we care for Susan and have to rely more...

I was Don's first graduate student. From him I learned "how to learn". He was a creative scientist, consummate musician, and a wonderful father.

I was Don's first graduate student. What I learned from him has lasted a lifetime. Although it has been many years since we have communicated- his passing leaves a void.

In loving memory of a wonderful person with whom I shared my life during all 4 years of high school plus 1 of college. My thoughts and prayers will be especially for Susan and Adrienne as well as for Michele and Lorraine. Mary Ruhfel Matteson

Don and I met in September 1960 when we entered Johns Hopkins as undergrads. We were classmates, fraternity brothers, roommates, wedding participants, and fishing buddies ever since. He was the guy I knew the longest and I am so very sorry for Susan and the family to have learned of his passing, If it had not been for COVID, we would have recently had a visit to Oregon as well.
