Donald Hardy Obituary

Donald Clive Hardy, 88, of New Orleans, Louisiana, a prominent New Orleans historian, died on the evening of October 9 at Poydras Home. Clive was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Martha D. Hardy, also of New Orleans, and Stanley Clive Hardy of the United Kingdom, and grew up at 1220 Second Street. Clive is predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Shirley Marie Boeckling of Peru, Illinois. Clive received a Masters of Art in history from Tulane University and finished his formal education with a graduate degree in Archival Management at the University of Texas in Austin. Clive was the first Archivist at the University of New Orleans, where he built the New Orleans Collection, an important primary source of great historical interest. Clive, the quintessential New Orleanian, maintained a lifelong interest and love of New Orleans history and culture, and he knew where the bodies were buried. He viewed the past as prelude to the future. Clive is survived by his three children, Carl J. Hardy, Henry Drueding Hardy, and Mary Louise Moise; and four grandchildren, Frances Hardy, Clive Thomas Hardy, Thomas Moise, and Henry Moise. In addition, the family would like to acknowledge the lifelong familial relationship which developed among the genetically unrelated families (the Roaches, the Lowreys, and the Hardys) by listing the following as survivors: Charlotte, David, Leon, Zite, Mimi, Bert, Caroline, Charlotte, Liz and Hilary. A special thank you to the wonderful caregivers at Hunter House. A memorial for Clive will be held on October 21 from 1 to 3 pm at the Round Table Club at 6330 St. Charles Avenue.
