DONALD WISEMAN Obituary

Donald Max Wiseman 1925 ~ 2010 On January 22nd, 2010 we lost another good man. Donald Max Wiseman died suddenly while doing the thing he did best. He was taking care of his wife and sweetheart, Edice Hansen Wiseman. They had been married since April 14, 1947. Don was born on November 27th, 1925 to Cyrus Keith Wiseman and Elsie Wheeler Wiseman in Murray, Utah. He was a devoted son and had many great friends. However, at an early age Don decided his dreams would take him away from Utah. His journey began as he entered the 2nd World War as a member of the US Navy. While Don's intellect and academic history pointed him to officer's school, his color blindness kept him from future officer appointments. He remained in the Navy and served until the end of the war in the Pacific on a troop transport. After being discharged, he met Edice at the Veterans' Hospital. It didn't take her long to realize she had found her perfect match. Don went to school and worked several jobs with various companies until a fateful day when he was offered a clerk's job with "The Milwaukee Road" a large Midwestern railroad company with an office in Salt Lake City. That was 1951. For the rest of his professional life he would excel with this one company as they promoted him to various responsibilities across the country. In 1965 after a successful three years in NYC, Don was promoted to Vice President of Sales in the home office in Chicago, Illinois. It would become the place he would call his home. He loved the life of a metropolitan. He loved music, theatre and entertaining. He loved Chicago architecture, Michigan Avenue and the sights and sounds of a city in motion. He was the perfect host and Master of Ceremonies. Everyone appreciated his gregarious nature. This innate ability to connect to people allowed him to develop lasting relationships. He was also an accomplished piano accompanist and taught himself how to make incredible music at the pipe organ. He was the organist in his LDS chapel in Wilmette, Illinois for many years and played in several other churches and at other special occasions. Along the way, he and Edice raised two sons - David and Keith. He was a perfect example of hard work and dedication. He leaves a legacy of class and professionalism laced with loyalty and friendship. He is survived by his wife Edice of 62 years; sons, David (wife Sally) and Keith (wife Helen); grandsons, Zachary, Tony, Jason, Josh, Nick, Joseph and granddaughter Natalie. He also leaves behind 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Elsie and CK, sister Melva Peters, brother Sherman and infant son Mark Wheeler Wiseman. From all who knew him and those who loved him well, thank you Don for making our journey here more interesting and for being such an example of what it meant to be a good man. Don's wishes were that only a graveside service would be held in Salt Lake City, Utah for members of the immediate family.

As a 26 year old city sales representative in Chicago, IL. with the old CMSTP&P, I was introduced to Mr. Wiseman. Imposing, inspirational, something that I aspired to be? Yes, all of these. I didn't achieve his greatness, but he did inspire me to be one heck of a railroader. For that I thank him and will always remember him. Tom Davis, Milwaukee Road
