Doris Brantley Obituary

Doris L. Brantley COLUMBIA - A Celebration of Life Memorial Service for Doris Lochmandy Brantley will be held Friday, October 17, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Martin's-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church. Immediately following the service, family and friends will be received in the parish hall. Mrs. Brantley passed away Tuesday, October 14, 2014. Born in South Bend, Indiana, she was a daughter of the late Stephen and Mary Kish Lochmandy. Surviving are her husband of 70 years, Vernon H. Brantley; daughters, Laura B. Hoff (Steve) of Elgin, Cynthia B. Day (Jeff) of Blythewood; son, Steven T. Brantley (Mary Ball) of Columbia; grandchildren, Brantley Rayle (Laura), Travis Rayle, Shanna Gilmer (Robert), Stephanie Hoff, Matthew Day (Beth), Emily Day, Mary Gervais Brantley, Sarah Brantley; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two brothers and sister. Mrs. Brantley's career began as a newlywed working at the Federal Ration Board while her husband served in combat with the Army during WWII. Later she became the Executive Director of the SC State Board of Cosmetology. During this time, one of her proudest accomplishments was rewriting and revising antiquated State Cosmetology Rules and Regulations thereby raising the standard of education and requirements for students, schools and salons. She was a member of St. Martin's for many years serving on the Altar Guild, the Martineer's Group, Foyer Group, Flower Delivery and other activities. She was a member and past president of Alpha Zeta Sorority, an Associate Member of the SC Chapter Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, and numerous bridge and garden clubs. Mrs. Brantley and her husband enjoyed retirement with extensive travels, yardening, and spending time at their lake home with their children and grandchildren. Her presence and feistiness will be greatly missed by many. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 3223 Sunset Blvd, Ste. 100, West Columbia, SC, 29169, or to St. Martin's-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church Building Fund, 5220 Clemson Avenue, Columbia, SC 29206. Vernon, I am so sorry for your loss, I am so glad I got to meet you and Doris the first time last december at the get together at the museum when I brought your sister Mrs. Jean you both were very nice to me and then when I brought mrs. Jean to Doris's sisters funeral and the get together at the home of one of the children later. It has been a pleasure meeting both of you and I want you to know I care very deeply for your sister and I'm here to help her in any way I can. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. And as you told me at Glady's funeral you will never forget my name because it was the same as your mothers.
God bless you and your family.Shirley Childers

Steve
I just found out about your mom. I remember her as a "spunky" little lady when I helped your folks on the lake house.

You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
