Doris Bumpus Obituary

Doris Jean McWhorter Baggett Bumpus, 96, passed away on September 7, 2025. She was born on July 26, 1929 to Herman D. and Elsie Underwood McWhorter in Cunningham, TN. Doris graduated Central High School in 1947 and attended Cass Tech in Detroit Michigan.

Doris was a retired division manager at Sears Roebuck and Co. in Clarksville, past director at Farm Bureau and Farm Bureau woman's group. She volunteered at Clarksville Memorial Hospital and Clarksville Senior Citizens, and a pianist for the Young at Heart and Golden girls when they sang at local nursing homes.

Doris was a member of Martha's Chapel Community church for 65 years, where over the years was the assistant pianist, choir member, Sunday school teacher, member of O. F. & H (Over Fifty and Happy) group. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, and puzzles.

 Doris was always sharing and gifting her friends and family her latest projects. She was a remarkable individual whose love of her family knew no bounds. She cherished each member as if they were her own, loving and supporting them with unwavering affection.

In addition to her parents, Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie H. Bumpus, of 53 years, sons, Lynn C. Bumpus and Lewis Bumpus, grandson, Lonnie Thomas Bumpus, brother, Cecil and sister- in-law Margaret McWhorter.

She is survived by her son Michael B. Baggett and wife, Julia Baggett, niece, Sherry McWhorter Abernathy (Andy), grandchildren, Michael R. Baggett, James E. Baggett, Lewis Dudley Bumpus Jr. (Jennifer), Christine Maroney (Sean), and Lorie Savage (Steven); great- grandchildren: Marissa Bumpus Puckett (Nic), Easton Bumpus, Kaylee Baggett, August Maroney, Benjamin Maroney, Adeline Savage, and Dalton Savage, great great- grandson, Eric Puckett, great niece, Sonya E. DeSilva (Gary), great nephew, Jeremy Ellis (Michelle), great great- nephews Zack and Nick DeSilva and Hunter Ellis, and great great niece, Tristen Worstall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may go to Martha's Chapel Church Cemetery Fund or charity of choice.

A special thanks to Maureen Kosobud, Makalla Parchman, Linda S. Simpson, Linda Yarbrough, Connie Layne, and the staff of Uffelman Estates for their wonderful care.

A Celebration of life service will be held Monday, September 15, 2025 at 1:00 PM at Sykes Funeral Home with Rev. Ben Falls officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday from 11:00 AM until the hour of service.
