Doris J. (Reed) Chittenden
July 9, 1936 - July 7, 2025
Doris J. Reed Chittenden, age 88 York, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025.
Doris was born on 7/9/1936 to Ralph and Gladys (Dory) Reed in Hampton, Neb. She was baptized and confirmed in the Hampton Methodist Church and was a member of this church for many years. She attended Hampton Public Schools and graduated on May, 13, 1954. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Fi sorority for many years where she met many lifelong friends. Doris was also honored to attend the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program in her youth. After moving to York she was a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church for over 75 years.
Doris dedicated her professional life to administrative roles, leaving a lasting impact wherever she went. She skillfully supported the York Foundry and Engine Works, her invaluable contributions were deeply appreciated for over 30 years. Doris also served as an administrative assistant for Scott Horigan for a number of years. In her later career, Doris brought her talents to York State Bank Investments team, assisting financial advisor Dave Langner. Doris concluded her distinguished career with 11 years of dedicated and invaluable service to Dave and the York State Bank.
Doris married F. Max Chittenden on January 12th, of 1980, with whom she shared in marriage until his passing in 1991. She and Max had many memorable adventures around the world, she would bring back souvenir spoons from the countries they explored and loved telling stories about their travels.
She had many wonderful hobbies with baking being one of her favorites. She was entered into the Granny Smith Apple Contest 2000 in Washington State by her grandson, Kendall. From this she became one of the finalists and received prizes and a free trip to Washington State to enjoy the festivities. Doris also entered in State Fair/ County Fair contests with her wonderful pies, cakes, brownies, and casseroles for many years where she was awarded best in class.
She had a love for gardening with carnations, moon flowers, and angel trumpets being some of her favorite flowers. She enjoyed Tuesday coffees with cousins at McDonalds, latch hook, and selling Mary Kay products as a hobby. She had a sweet dog named Sparky and numerous cats to keep her company. Doris had a love for Cadillacs, the color purple, handbags, and she was an astrology enthusiast where she appreciated her own zodiac sign which was a cancer. Her family will always remember shared memories with her at Sunday evening dinners and many holiday get togethers.
Doris is survived by her son, Kent (Janet) Reed; granddaughter, Kelsey (Jordan) Fikar; grandson, Kendall (Paige) Reed; great grandchildren, Madison Vogel, Barrett Vogel; step grandchildren, Jeff Harrison, Kyle (Gina) Harrison, and Samantha (Drake) Davidson; step great grandchildren, Odin Harrison, and Isley Davidson. She also is survived by siblings, Terrill (Joe) Johns, Tim Reed, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by husband, F. Max Chittenden; siblings, Beverly (Warren) Dunham, Howard Reed, and Terry (Joyce) Reed; great granddaughters, Leah and Brynlee Vogel.
A visitation will be held Sunday, July 13, 2025 from 5 to 7 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 309 E. 7th Street, York, Neb. A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 14, 2025 at 10 a.m., 309 E. 7th Street, York, Neb. Entombment at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery, 6700 So.14th St. Lincoln, Neb.
