Dortha Sims Obituary

Dortha Jean Campbell Sims passed away on Tuesday, August 5th, at her home in Houston, peacefully and surrounded by her family. Dortha was born on the 12th of October, 1932 in Norfolk, Virginia to Frank Harold and Dortha Mae Campbell. The baby sister to two brothers, William J. and Glenn H. Campbell, Dortha's early childhood was shaped by the Depression, the nearby seashore, and the large naval base in Norfolk. Both of her brothers served our country in WWII with Glenn making the ultimate sacrifice in April, 1945 in Germany. Dortha graduated from the all-girls Madison College (James Madison University today) and soon after met her loving husband Steve who was serving in the Navy. The couple moved to Houston, and over the next 45 years the family prospered and grew. Her two children, David and Susan, added six adoring grandchildren to the family. Sadly, Steve and Dortha's wonderful partnership ended in 2003, with her devoted and loving husband's passing. For the next eleven years, Dortha continued to be the sweetest, and most giving person any family could hope for, until she passed into the Lord's loving care. Dortha is survived by her son, David Campbell Sims (and wife Cheryl), her daughter Susan Sims Wood (and husband Jeffrey), her grandchildren, Clayton Sims, Zachary Wood, Lauren Sims, Joshua Wood, Samuel Wood, and Jonathan Wood, and nephews Dennis Campbell (and wife Cindy) and Brad Campbell.
A graveside service is planned for 11 am at Memorial Oaks Cemetery followed by a memorial visitation at 11:45 am at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home.

Susan and David,

Your Mom was a very close and dear friend of mine since 1960. Our friendship began as being nextdoor neighbors. We shared so much over these past years together----learning how to be "MOMS" was one of our first lessons. She had NO problem with that task. Dortha was a terrific Mom. I have never seen such a loving and devoted Mother as she was to you both.
I am so very lucky to have called her my friend. She was a wonderful and kind LADY and I will really miss her.

My sympathy to you both and your families.

Love,
Linda Penny

Susan and David,
I am sorry to have missed the service for Dortha. Be certain I was there in spirit to mourn the loss of my dear, longtime friend. I think it is 50 years at least that I have been close to you mom.She was a friend as she was a mom to you - - always there for help and support. She and Steve shared most of the good times as well as the bad. We will all miss her greatly.

With love and sympathy to all, Jane Bremer

We were so happy to call Dortha our dear friend ever since she arrived in Houston many years ago. We have shared so many of life's experiences with her; and she was always there in rough times, as well as the happy occasions. Truly, she was such a wonderful, loving, and selfless person. We will miss her so much, David and Susan, and
will continue holding you and your families in our thoughts and prayers now and in the days to come. Our love and deepest sympathies, Harriet and John Wolda

David, Susan & Families,
I am sorry to learn of Aunt Dortha's passing. We did not see each other enough since we lived in different parts of the country. I have fond memories of our visits to the family home on Kimberley Lane in 1964 and 1973. Your parents were wonderful hosts who made us feel welcome. I enjoyed having telephone conversations with your mom and appreciate the love and support she gave my father. I still have a pair of socks she made for my dad as a birthday gift some 65 or 70 years ago. They are still in great shape, they fit me and I wear them occasionally. Cindy and my thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
Love,
Dennis
