DOUGLAS BETTENHAUSEN Obituary

DOUGLAS KENT BETTENHAUSEN Douglas Kent Bettenhausen, 50, of Raleigh passed into the loving arms of his Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, May 17th surrounded by his family. Doug suffered for several years from multiple system atrophy, a rare degenerative neurological disease for which there is no cure and no treatment. However, MSA did not define his life. Doug was born in Fayetteville, NC to Letha Grace Bettenhausen and the late Edgar George Bettenhausen. He graduated from Westover Sr High School in Fayetteville. He received a BS in Pharmacy from UNC and a PharmD from Campbell University. Doug was VP of Medical Affairs and Product Safety at Salix Pharmaceuticals until his retirement for medical reasons. He was one of the original staff in the Raleigh location, and upon his retirement a company award was created in his honor. He was a devoted member of Open Door Baptist Church. His favorite saying was "you touch it, you catch it" which he took from his football playing days, but which he applied to everything in his life. He touched so many during his incredible journey. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Herring Bettenhausen, son Jonathan Douglas Bettenhausen and daughter Allison Grace Bettenhausen of the home. His mother Letha Grace Bettenhausen and brother Kevin Scott Bettenhausen, both of Raleigh as well as his devoted canines Spencer and Frisbee buddy Casey. Also surviving are mother-in-law Wilma Herring of Warsaw and a large extended family and many loving friends. His greatest joy here on earth were Jonathan and Allie, both of whom he was shamelessly proud. His family would like to extend a special thank you to the employees of Salix Pharmaceuticals for their continued love and support throughout Doug's illness. "...we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance, character; and character, hope" Romans 5:3-4 In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Open Door Baptist Church or Magellan Charter School. His family will receive friends on Sunday May 19, 2013 from 4:00-6:00 pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd., Raleigh NC, 27609. Funeral Services will be held Monday May 20, 2013 at Open Door Baptist Church, 9801 Durant Rd., Raleigh, NC 27615. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.BrownWynne.com

Sandra, while on a conference call this morning, I thought of Doug and wanted to reach out to you and the kids to say how much we miss him at Salix. When he passed away, we were in Orlando at DDW and I wasn't able to attend the funeral. I have thought about you--and especially the children--many times since he passed. My father died suddenly when I was a teenager, so I have a soft spot for kids that have to deal with losing a parent at such a young age. Doug was such a great guy to have around--smart, humble, and easy-going. He was always one of my favorites at Salix, and always will be. There will never be another Doug.

Dear Sandra, Letha, Kevin & the children,
Our best memories of Doug go back to the times we spent in NC at the "Beach House". Our children were the same age as Doug and Kevin and spent many hours playing together. Thanks for being in our family and may God give you comfort in the days ahead. We will not forget you.

Sandra, the service today was beautiful! We always remember your family was one of the first we met when we moved into the neighborhood 10 years ago. We could always find Doug in the cul de sac playing frisbee with Casey! It was so nice to meet neighbors who were fellow pharma industry veterans. In the past few years, we so much admired your family's strength and courage. And we always remember Doug telling us that there were people who had it much worse than he did. Such an inspiration! We love you all,

Was deeply saddened to hear of Doug's passing. The outstanding character, contagious smile and gentle manner I remember from high school, obviously served him well in his full, yet too short, life. Prayers and deepest sympathy to his beautiful family. It is obvious from the photos that Doug had much to be proud of and a great deal of love in his life.

Dear Sandra,Jonathon, & Allie, I know we have never met;however, my mom Ella Bettenhausen always updated me on Doug since I have two familiar areas in common.(Neurological Disease Multiple Sclerosis & a graduate from Pharmacy School. A happy memory that you may not know is that Kevin convinced me to ride the famous roller coaster at Kings Dominion 13 times! He may have screamed like a little girl but I did not notice because I screamed louder than a jet engine. Crazy things cousins will do. Sending prayers up for peace and comfort to you and all the people he touched. Love, Barbara Burr-Glass (Dothan, AL)

Although I hadn't seen Doug in a long time, I always kept up with him via SusaN Britt. Doug and I spent many years in the same dept at GSK, and we even played some coed softball together. Doug was always working out and taking care of himself. He was a lot of fun to be around. My thoughts are with Sandra, his children, and the entire family. God bless Doug and each of you in this time of sorrow. He was surrounded by wonderful people.

Sandra, Jonathan and Allison: I have never met you, but am encouraged by knowing how you loved and cared for your husband/father. Doug was my cousin, older than me by a year, and I remember visiting Fayetteville in the mid 70's. Doug gave me a ride on his motorcycle and I burned the inside of my leg on the exhaust pipe (I think!). Anyway, that scar was a constant reminder of a very fun day spent with my big and fun cousin Doug. May you be comforted by the thought that he is enjoying his heavenly body and in the presence of his Lord and Savior. I will keep you in my prayers as you continue your earthly lives, that God will give you peace and hope.
Aunt Leatha and Kevin: I am so sorry for another loss and pray that you will feel God's presence, knowing Doug is with his earthly father and heavenly Father. Thinking of you both during this difficult time.
Love, Pattie Bettenhausen-Buck
