Dear Mrs Henderson,
I just read of Doug's death by an email from the
J. Mol.Liquids.
Though we were still in contact iI was unaware of it.
I spent one year working with Doug as supervisor at IBM, some 40 years ago. At the time you were living in beautiful Skyview Terrace, a wonderful location.
The last time we met was in 2010 at a conference in Brno, but we had quite a few messages after.
As one of the very many who benfited a lot from his help and advice in research, I have always kept a vivid and grateful memory of an oustanding person, not just as as very distinguished scientist, but also as a devoted husband and father.
These news has been a hard one for me and my wife Cristina.
Please accept our sincere, though belated , condolences.
Yours
Alessandro Tani

Doug and my husband knew each other since 1964 when Doug invited my husband to join him for a post doctoral year. Doug was in Fluid Mechanics and Sydney is Solid State Physics, after the one year they each went onto difference areas in their mathematcs. Sadly my husband died three days after Doug and he never knew about Doug, sadly he would have taken it with difficulty. They had corresponded over many years and we were very honoured to have spent time with him and his family in California. They were the same age and sadly we have we have lo twost wonderful people. I used to e-mail Doug and he was always so delighted to tell me of the activities of his family and grand children, I shall miss him dearly. I send all good wishes ro Rose-Marie and his family. I have known Doug and Rose Marie as neighbors and friends for over 25 years. Doug was a quiet, gentle man who thought deeply about many things regarding not only his scientific field of study and interest, but spiritual matters as well. I will miss not seeing them weekly sitting on the same chapel bench each week in Sacrament Meeting. There was something reassuring about that for me each week. Doug had a patient heart and a voracious appetite for reading. I have enjoyed our email conversations over the years. I will miss Doug, Rose Marie, and Bonnie very much. May Heavenly Father extend peace to Rose Marie and her family at this time. You all were ALWAYS her favorite topic of conversation. She is so very proud of you all.
Sincerely, and with love,
Carolyn Madson
