Douglas Henderson Obituary

1934-2020
Salt Lake City, Utah-
"He Loved His Family"
Douglas Henderson passed away on September 25, 2020. He was the son of Donald Ross Henderson and Evelyn Louise Scott and was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on July 28, 1934. His family moved to Vancouver, British Columbia when he was 9 and it was there that he grew up. He attended high school in Vancouver and obtained his undergraduate degree in mathematics in 1956 from the University of British Columbia.
He served a mission for the LDS Church in South Africa, serving in and around Johannesburg and Capetown. It was in South Africa that he met Rose-Marie Steen-Nielssen. They were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in 1960. They had three daughters, Barbara Davis (Rod) of Orem, UT, Dianne Lowrey (Bill) of Morgan Hill, CA, and Sharon Matt (Ed) of Park City, UT and eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He loved and was proud of his family. He was predeceased by his parents and is survived by his wife, Rose-Marie, and his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. Doug was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was a high priest. He served in several bishoprics.
Doug pursued his graduate education at the University of Utah, where he obtained a doctoral degree in physics under Henry Eyring in 1961. He and Henry Eyring developed a long friendship; they collaborated in the writing of several books. In fact, one of their books was Henry Eyring's last publication. In the course of his work with Eyring, Doug developed a lifelong interest in the interfaces between mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biophysics.
Doug taught at the University of Idaho, Arizona State University, the University of Waterloo, Canada and the Autonomous Metropolitan University in Mexico City. The majority of his career was spent as a member of the research staff of the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, CA. After retiring from IBM, Doug taught chemistry at BYU for several years and continued his research there. He held honorary professorships at the University of Hong Kong and the Rush Medical University in Chicago. He also received an honorary doctorate from the Ukrainian National Academy of Science.
His work was highly regarded. He was an international leader in the theory of liquids. His pioneering work and breakthroughs during the past 60 years have defined areas of research for liquids, solutions, and electrolytes. His first major contribution, in 1967 with Australian researcher John Barker, concerned the perturbation theory of fluids. A second major contribution was an integral equation for liquid-solid interfaces. Doug is the author of 500 scientific articles, including one in Scientific American, and 62 major reviews in the field of statistical mechanics. He won two awards from IBM for his research. He was a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the Institute of Physics, the American Institute of Chemists, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. He received the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellowship (1964 & 1966) and a John Guggenheim Fellowship (1997). In 1999, he was awarded the prestigious Joel Henry Hildebrand National American Chemical Society Award in the Theoretical and Experimental Chemistry of Liquids.
Funeral services and interment will be held on Friday, October 2, 2020 at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park at 3401 Highland Drive, Millcreek, UT.

Dear Mrs Henderson,

I just read of Doug's death by an email from the
J. Mol.Liquids.
Though we were still in contact iI was unaware of it.
I spent one year working with Doug as supervisor at IBM, some 40 years ago. At the time you were living in beautiful Skyview Terrace, a wonderful location.
The last time we met was in 2010 at a conference in Brno, but we had quite a few messages after.
As one of the very many who benfited a lot from his help and advice in research, I have always kept a vivid and grateful memory of an oustanding person, not just as as very distinguished scientist, but also as a devoted husband and father.
These news has been a hard one for me and my wife Cristina.
Please accept our sincere, though belated , condolences.

Yours
Alessandro Tani

Doug and my husband knew each other since 1964 when Doug invited my husband to join him for a post doctoral year. Doug was in Fluid Mechanics and Sydney is Solid State Physics, after the one year they each went onto difference areas in their mathematcs. Sadly my husband died three days after Doug and he never knew about Doug, sadly he would have taken it with difficulty. They had corresponded over many years and we were very honoured to have spent time with him and his family in California. They were the same age and sadly we have we have lo twost wonderful people. I used to e-mail Doug and he was always so delighted to tell me of the activities of his family and grand children, I shall miss him dearly. I send all good wishes ro Rose-Marie and his family. I have known Doug and Rose Marie as neighbors and friends for over 25 years. Doug was a quiet, gentle man who thought deeply about many things regarding not only his scientific field of study and interest, but spiritual matters as well. I will miss not seeing them weekly sitting on the same chapel bench each week in Sacrament Meeting. There was something reassuring about that for me each week. Doug had a patient heart and a voracious appetite for reading. I have enjoyed our email conversations over the years. I will miss Doug, Rose Marie, and Bonnie very much. May Heavenly Father extend peace to Rose Marie and her family at this time. You all were ALWAYS her favorite topic of conversation. She is so very proud of you all.
Sincerely, and with love,
Carolyn Madson
