Doyle McCraw Obituary

Doyle Reynold McCraw

Memphis, TN

Doyle Reynold McCraw, 96, passed into heaven on Thursday, November 17, 2016. He is reunited with his wife of 55 years, Virginia Carolyn, and his eldest daughter Carol Elizabeth. He is preceded in death by his parents James Elvis and Mary McCraw, and siblings Lucille Gill, Elvis McCraw, Harland McCraw, James McCraw, Oleta Matthews, Pete McCraw, Marie Sandusky, Hugh McCraw, Rebecca LaRosa, Don McCraw, and Joseph McCraw. He is survived by daughters Sharon Sargent (Kevin) and Tammie Pellegrin (Stephen), and his precious granddaughter Claire Elizabeth Pellegrin. He also leaves his sister Blanche Gipson of Borger, TX, as well as many nieces and nephews. Doyle lived a life of service to the Lord, as a faithful member and deacon at The First Baptist Church of Memphis, where his many years of servitude included chairman of the audio and transportation committees, beloved bus driver for the youth choir and camp trips, and training union leader. Doyle enjoyed sharing his life experiences about the Dust Bowl, his time in the Civilian Conservation Corps, U.S. Navy and U.S. Postal Service. He served during WWII and later was a flight engineer on Advanced Early Warning reconnaissance flights. By the end of his Naval career, he was an instructor and had achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Doyle helped others in need and in 2001 was selected for recognition for "The Hero Next Door: Community Stories" by Facing History and Ourselves. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to First Baptist Church of Memphis, 200 East Parkway N., Memphis TN 38112. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 22nd at 9am with funeral service to follow at 10am at First Baptist Church.

Prayers and sympathy to the family. Doyle was one of the last people I enjoyed talking to about our days of long ago in Sayre. His memory was perfect and made for many pleasurable phone visits. Merlene Austin Bramlett.

I never saw Uncle Doyle without a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. Family was important to him...certainly his wife and daughters and granddaughter, but also his siblings. He drove from Memphis to Sayre, OK for the McCraw reunion probably more years than was safe. When asked if the trip wasn't a little long for him to be driving, he said, "I just get in the car and get to the interstate; it does the rest." Perhaps stubbornness is a McCraw trait as well as a sense of humor? We will miss your Daddy and are thinking of you all.

Your daddy meant the world to me. He made me feel like I was one of his daughters. How could he not? I was always over at the house! He was one of a kind! I will never forget his kindness and generosity and of course his cute sense of humor. Humor runs in the McCraw family for sure, always making someone smile or laugh. He touched so many people. I will miss him so much. Love and prayers, Sharon, Tammie, and to all of your family.

Love,
Denise & Dale
