Mihovk-Rosenacker Funeral Home - Evendale/Blue Ash Obituary

David Henry Groth, M.D. was born on December 28, 1934, in Rochester, New York and died peacefully surrounded by family on April 10, 2025, in Blue Ash, Ohio. A kind and generous man with steadfast intellect and dedication to public service, David’s legacy will inspire those who knew him.

David began his academic journey at the College of Wooster,  where he earned a B.A. in chemistry - a foundation that led him to Yale University School of Medicine where he received his M.D. in 1962. He was a Diplomate, American Board of Pathology. David’s professional career began with the U.S. Public Health Service and flourished during his twenty-four-year tenure at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) from 1964 to 1988. Working at the NIOSH Center in Cincinnati, David served as Chief, Pathology Section and later as Advisor and Policy Director.

Dr. Groth’s experimental work focused on the occupational and environmental causes of cancer in humans and experimental animals. His achievements resulted in widespread recognition of his expertise in the pathology of occupational diseases. He is known for his meticulous review of epidemiological studies and essential recommendations regarding workplace exposure to carcinogens such as asbestos, beryllium, vinyl chloride, and silica and environmental toxins. He was a repeated point of consultation with federal agencies; pathologists; and industry, labor and legal representatives from the United States and other countries.

After retirement Dr. Groth’s achievements as a distinguished scientist resulted in his election to the Collegium Ramazzini, a select group of international occupational health scientists. He continued to be recognized as an expert witness in litigation supporting workers with exposure to carcinogens and environmental toxins.

Beyond his professional achievements, David was a loving and supportive family member. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Jane Bradley; his sons, Lyle Groth (Carrie), Richard Groth (Chris), and William Groth; his stepsons, James Mrowiec and David Mrowiec; Jessica Joannis and Nicholas Joanis; grandchildren Jason Groth (Amber), Jenna Groth and Warren Mrowiec, and  great granddaughters, Isla Groth, Jasmine Joanis and Maia Joanis.

In addition to his work David cherished a life of enrichment as a  Scout Master, a supporter and past member of May Festival Chorus, an avid tennis player and an enthusiastic golfer. David especially enjoyed frequent visits with family at home, the annual Christmas gatherings, summer vacations at Ocean Isle and most recently, his 90th birthday party.

A Celebration of Life will be held on May 18 from 3-5 pm at Cooper Creek in Blue Ash.

Memorial contributions in David’s honor are suggested to Hospice of Cincinnati (www.hospiceofcincinnati.org).
