Edith J. Poruben, a long-time resident of Montgomery, AL died Sunday, the 26th of January 2014 in Birmingham, AL. She was born in 1922 in Bullard, GA. Some of her fondest childhood memories are from the years her family lived on the Red Dog Farm and later in Cochran, GA where she played point guard on the school basketball team. In 1946 she married Ben P. Poruben. They started their life together in Macon, GA and later moved to Montgomery, AL in 1956.

She was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church where she was involved in many areas of ministry. Upon retirement, Edith researched her genealogy and became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution in honor of her mother.

Edith was a loving and dedicated daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Family was very important to her and nothing made Edith happier than having all her family together. Her kind and caring life extended not only to her family, but to her many friends. She has been a blessing to many and the valuable lessons she has taught through her life are precious gifts.

Edith was predeceased by her loving husband of 58 years, Ben Poruben. Edith is survived by her daughters, Mary Sue Friedell and her husband, Earl, and daughter Patsy Scott and her husband, Mark. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Kathleen, Peter, David and Michael and five great-grandchildren.

I was a young teacher at Trinity while Edith was our bookkeeper. She was always so kind and caring. She spent a lot of time with me teaching me how to keep a ledger with the athletic department expenses. She was a special lady and was loved and appreciated at Trinity.

Edith was a wonderful person. Some of my fondest memories from my childhood involve her, Ben, Patsy and Mary Sue. I have thought about her numerous times over the years.

What a special caring and sweet lady she was. She never worried about herself but was always concerned about everyone else. I used to love when she came to church with you Patsy and always had a smile and an encouraging word for me. We thank God for bringing her into our lives and for the special blessing she was to us. God Bless her memory.

Patsy and Mary Sue,
I admired your mother for her many attributes, but the one I think of first was her practical and realistic attitude which contributed to the happiness of many. She seemed to me to be so like her own mother, who was many-talented and stayed engaged with the world.
Edith and Ben introduced my precious and recently late cousin/step-sister, Hazel Logan Tyson, to her husband, Julius Edward Tyson. They also married in 1946. Both couples were positive role models for me, then a very little girl.
My sympathy and love,
Mary Edna
