Edmund Doughty Obituary
CHEBEAGUE ISLAND - Edmund Ellis Doughty, 57, passed away on Nov. 28, 2015 at Maine Medical Center with his family at his side.
Ed, the son of Earle and Josephine Ellis Doughty, was born on April 2, 1958 in Madrid, Spain, where his father was a construction manager. The family moved to Chebeague, his father's childhood home, in 1960 and opened Doughty's Island Market in 1961. The store and the island were Ed's anchors. No matter where he travelled, Chebeague and the store brought him back home. In 1982, Ed took over management of the Island Market. In 1987, he married his long time love, Julie MacNeill, and together they operated the store continuing its legacy as a family business. He took great pride in his sons, Joshua and Dylan, with whom he shared his love of music and sports.
Ed attended the Chebeague Island School and graduated from Greely High School in 1976. At Greely he formed many life-long friendships and was active in track and field, holding a State record and played on the baseball team. He loved sports and spent hours watching the Patriots and the Red Sox with his family. He shared his love of sports with Dylan and was thrilled when Dylan's baseball team won the State Championship last June.
"Mr. Ed", as he was fondly known, had a life-long love of music, which he shared with his friends and family. He was so proud that his son, Josh, majored in music, and is a professional musician.
Ed liked nothing better than taking road trips with the boys to see live performances by their favorite bands. Over the years Ed formed personal connections with many professional musicians and had photos taken with folks such as David Crosby, Jackson Browne, James Taylor and numerous others. His connections helped many of his friends get back stage at concerts! Some of his favorite performers were Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, C.S.N., Neil Young, the Bryds, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and so many more. He was a music encyclopedia!
Ed also appreciated the natural world. He liked nothing more than spending time at his family camp "Tiekilew". He loved to get away to Burlington and watch the stars and planets and canoe through the great Maine woods and shared the camp with family and friends. He and his life-long friend, Mark Dyer, looked forward to their fall trips to the camp where they could enjoy the quiet and the solitude of an afternoon of canoeing on Saponac Lake and Madagascar Stream.
For many people, Ed Doughty was the face of Chebeague. Everyone was special to Mr. Ed, and he endeared himself to others by creating his own nickname for many folks! He enjoyed watching the children as they contemplated their purchases. Chebeague's many visitors appreciated his smile and greeting of "welcome home"! He was happiest when islanders would come in to the store to chat, catch-up on the news, listen to the latest music, or share a joke. His passing has left a void in the Chebeague community.
Edmund Doughty is survived by his wife, Julie; sons, Joshua and Dylan; and special nieces, Karly, Jodie, and Mindy Derby.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4, 2015 at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. A celebration of Ed's life will be held on Saturday Dec. 5, 2015 at the Chebeague Island United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. followed by a graveside burial. Family and friends are invited to share memories at the Chebeague Island Hall after the burial. I was deeply saddened to hear of Edmunds passing he was a relative and good friend. I will miss having coffee w him daily at doughtys market. Edmund joined me to climb Mt katahdin on my 1994 thru hike of the at.

Julie,Josh and Dylan So sorry to here about Ed.We were classmates at Greely.Ed and I ran track together. We always won the 440 relay.He used to stay with us when he couldn't make the Ferry after practices.I also have been up to the Camp canoeing.We listened to Frampton Comes alive all weekend it seems.Had several midnight boat rides from the Falmouth town Landing.Lots of music brings back memories of Ed. There are too many memories to mention!!!

Moving to Russia meant my trips to Chebeague were rare. When I did return it was the stop into Doughty's and talking to Edmund that made it feel like home and reminded me of the cherished times I had there with my Mom and Dad as we shared those memories. The light of Chebeague will shine a little dimmer for me now. He was a very rare and special person.

My wife's family have been coming to Chebeague since 1953. I was always a Smith (Heather's husband and Melody's brother-in-law), when I stop in at Doughty's Island market and was greeted by Ed and Julie. I will always remember his great smile and the time when he was part of saving the Pilot Cracker.

R.I.P. Edmund, I'll always remember the good times we had growing up. You always made me laugh. We shared many of the best times I had on the island. I'll never forget your milk truck and riding around in it when we were kids. I loved watching movies with you on those disk that looked like records. Dear Ed: man, we will miss you and the great vibe you and Julie created in your store, on the island, and in the world. You stood there like a great friendly bear who helped keep the peace in the center the community. You keep a wry smile while everyone came in to get what they needed: bread, candy, beer, tips, gossip. When the notion strikes you to look up an old friend, don't hesitate as I have. Edmund has been so prominently in my thoughts lately, and I cannot reconcile my procrastination. Ed was truly one of a kind, a force of nature, a gentle giant. His imprint will live on in his many friends, family, and amazing sons. Ed has been one of the constants of my life. Chebeague was my refuge in tough times and seeing Ed, getting a hug anytime one was needed, was a part of what made it feel like my true home. You always felt like you were a special friend to Ed, like seeing you made his day too. It truly, truly leaves a hole in our hearts. Ed Doughty was truly the face of Chebeague Island for so many. No matter who you were, no matter what you were buying from the Island Market (or even if you weren't buying anything and just asking for directions to the best beaches), and no matter how long his day had been, Ed always had a cheerful greeting and a firm and hearty handshake. The word doughty means brave, persistent, fearless, persevering. Ed was an example of all of those qualities for us all. Chebeague will not be the same.

Such sad news. Jim and I will miss Ed's "welcome back!" on our first visit to the store every summer. He was unfailingly warm and cordial and a big part of what made Chebeague so special. I remember going to Doughty's in the 60s and seeing adorable little Ed crawling around. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Julie, and the boys.

It is impossible to prepare for the loss of one so dear. My heart and head is filled with 40+ years of big laughter, loud music, immense bear hugs, road trips, salt air, outrageous behavior and a steamer trunk bursting with additional memories.

I am so saddened to hear about Ed's passing. I feel blessed to have known him during our Greely High School years. He was the sweetest person ever! When my sister, Terri, visited his store on Chebeague a couple of years ago, she gave him my phone number. He called me and we had such a nice conversation about our families, our GHS years, and he even remembered how we were partnered to walk down the aisle together on graduation day. I could tell he still had a smile in his voice and kindness in his heart. I wish his family peace and to treasure all the memories you made with him before his too-soon passing.
