When I was a little boy of 7, I wrote Mr. Dubenion a letter to wish him well after he hurt his leg, and also to wishfully follow up on rumors that he might move into our neighborhood. I still have the long, appreciative letter that he wrote in reply.

I attended Fairwood elementary school, Roosevelt Jr high and south high with him, he graduated a half year befor I did by going to summer school. He was one of the nicest boys I was ever around and I think of him often even after all these years. Watching the Bills tonight brought back those memories. It was and is an honor to have him in my life.

When the AFL first started I was 14 years and developing a deep love for the game of football which last till this day. I had a second cousin who was a DC athlete of note and a true sports aficionado. I asked him about the new league's chances of surviving in the shadow vaunted NFL. He said, "They won't be in the shadows for long because there are a lot of Black boys that can really play this game who're now going to get a chance to show what they can do."
