Not sure what to say?

Dear John and family,
Our hearts go out to you in your loss. Ellen was a gentle, kind and thoughtful lady. Your devotion to each other was so apparent. We shall cherish our memories of her.

Dear John,
Although I had the pleasure of speaking with Ellen on several occasions, I am disappointed that the only time I was in her presence was at Margot's and my 50th wedding celebration.
