Ellen "Jake" Welch

Jake was voted Best Girl Athlete in her Centra.l High School class of 1952. I graduated 3 years later but I vividly remember watching Jake in the 7th hour class meant for the best upperclass athletes. She wasn't a tall gal but she could jump higher than anyone - volleyball, basketball, and she was a natural in every sport. We had a great teacher, Gertrude Jones. Central swept up all the sportsdays, so we later decided we should have annual reunions for all the Central Olympian Club...

I remember her fondly as a role model and an inspiration to excel. She and Ms. Griffin were wonderful gym teachers and great examples for me...never boastful or overly proud...just confident...and that´s perfect for any high school female.
