Emma Christina Obituary

Emma Black Christina born September 26, 1950 lost her 5th battle with reoccurring breast cancer on December 27, 2014. She is survived by her six children: Murphy (Monique), Salvadore (Amy), Mary Grace Blacklidge (John), Angelina Corales (Brian), Carlo, and Nezzie Rose Ducros (Robby); grandchildren who affectionately called her Lou Lou, Renée, Maia, Salvadore III (Sam), John Jr. (JJ), Caroline, Sofia, Zachary, Luca, Vandeveer, Bonnie Kate, Beckett, and Mason; siblings Jean Smith (Donald), Kenneth Black (Maridel), Madelyn Turner, William Black (Diane), Claude Black (Donna), Carol Lapre (Tom), Inez Olasin (Frank), Harry Black (Kim), and Kevin Black, and sister-in laws Francis Black and Marie Billings; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Douglas & Inez Black, her siblings Mary Ellen, Douglas W., and Robert S. Black, her brother- in-law Harry Turner, and her husband of 39 years Salvadore Christina. Emma held an undergraduate degree in elementary education, two Master's degrees in curriculum instruction and English secondary language (ESL) and was a National Board Certified teacher and National Board Certified in early childhood development. She taught at both Delgado and the Jefferson Parish public school system, the latter for nearly 25 years. She had a gift that she could, and loved to, teach people, especially children, how to read. As a young woman, Emma volunteered at St. Vincent's to help children in need. She adored her grandchildren and loved to be surrounded by her family. A special thanks to all the doctors, nurses and staff who were part of Emma's 20+ year battle with various reoccurring breast cancers, especially Dr. Laura Brinz and her office staff who helped see Emma through until the end. Thanks to the administration, teachers, and staff at Marie Riviere School. Emma loved to teach every day and refused to take a leave of absence until she could not get medical permission to return to work. Finally, a very special thanks to all the friends and family that provided support, help, and comfort until the very end. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a visitation at Lake LAwn Metairie Funeral Home on Saturday, January 10th from 9am -12, Mass will follow. Emma will be interned with her husband's ashes in the Christina family tomb in Metairie Cemetery following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Susan G. Komen Breast cancer Foundation of New Orleans 4141 Veterans Blvd., Metairie, LA 70002 are preferred. To view and sign the family guestbook, visit www.lakelawnmetairie.com.

Emma was a special person. She loved her students and truly cared about reaching each and every one of them. She was a great teacher that will be missed.

Emma was always ready to lend a helping hand, in any situation. I remember how she helped my son in middle school, donated notebooks to my class, and inspired me to attend science professional development meetings during my summer vacations. I learned a great deal and my students benefited. I will miss her and will keep her in my prayers.

To the Christina Family,
Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal. Miss. Emma was awesome at what she did, I had the opportunity of having her as my Teacher for several years at Delgado. What a blessing she was to her students and everyone that came in contact with her. Truly an Angel.

May God bless all of Emma's children, their spouses and her wonderful grandchildren during this very difficult time. I have been so blessed to have had Emma in my life as a friend and a coworker. I choose to celebrate her life, not to dwell on the sadness. She lived her life to the fullest, what a pepper! Emma was so full of life, even through all her tragedies, she was always so strong, and so full of love for all, especially the children, how she would fight for the children. Emma you will be sadly missed, but I know you are in heaven watching over all of us, to make sure we take care of the children!

I taught with Emma at Kate Middleton during the 80's, and she was a wonderful teacher and friend. I would see Emma at different places, and she always had a smile on her face. She never complained throughout all of her illnesses. She was always there for her loving husband during the times he was sick. Her family was very important to her. Emma will be missed by all that knew her. Rachel Bergman

My deepet sympathy to all he Christina and Black families. I had no idea Emma was that sick. I am in total shock! We would play games on Facebook and she didn't mention a thing. I loved reading her posts about her kids and grand kids. Both Christina parents left this world way too young! She will be truly missed but never forgotten.

Emma was a warrior and with all that she had gone through she still laughed and told dirty jokes...she couldn't top Sal's joke but she was in a class of her own. I hope to be more like Emma when I grow up. Thank you Emma and l'll be listening for more dirty jokes in the winds.

My love and codolences are extended to Emma's children, their spouses, and her grandchildren; her large loving family, and her many faithful friends. To know Emma was to love Emma. She was a shining light of love, generosity, advocacy, and inspiration. Her love of learning and teaching was shared with students from preschool to college. Her strong will to live was admired by all who witnessed her bravery and courage during her long illness and many remissions. She will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her and loving her. I will love her forever. Marie
