I was honored to have him as a professor at Simmons College. I learned so much from him and will always be thankful.

Dearest Susan,

I was shocked to have learned from Mitch Freedman about our loss of Ernie. I am sending you my love and my deepest sympathy for your bereavement. Ernie was a great friend with a heart of gold and we will miss him immensely. Let us try and think not of the bitterness of our loss but of the tremendous influence of Ernie's personality on our lives. I loved him dearly. I hope you will always consider me, Susan, if you need any help.

Yours,
Yakov Shrayberg

Brian, Amy and the DiMattia family, I remember having the pleasure of reacquainting myself with Mr. DiMattia at Brian and Becky's wedding. I quickly learned where half of the compassion, love and intelligence came from which are part of Brian and Amy's make up. Your Dad was so easy to talk to, be it Boston College all the way to Teddy Valentine and baseball. The entire DiMattia family is in our thoughts and prayers.

I will miss Ernie. He always had a smile to greet me and unfailingly asked how my family was doing. He was a good friend for about 5 decades. The Ferguson Library had Ernie at the helm for almost 38 years--a super blessing for the library thanks to the numerous innovative and pace-setting changes he made. My most heartfelt condolences to Susan and the DiMattia Family. I have lost a good friend and the Ferguson Library and all librarians have lost a great leader and librarian.

What a shock, attending ALA and finding that Ernie was not among the attendees. Ernie was a real mensch, from teacher and colleague, to gracious host and booster. He always stood by his friends. When he drove me to a CT Library Association conference even though he could not stay, I learned how deep his commitment was to me, an admiring colleague. We will miss his ever-present devotion to life and librarianship. He has left an enduring legacy for Stamford, ALA, Pratt, and his profession. My thoughts are with Susan, his children and relatives, friends and colleagues.

July 7, 2014

I was heartbroken when I came to the ALA conference and heard first that Ernie had cancer and then that he had passed. I have known Ernie for decades and have continually admired his professional expertise, personal strength, and family commitment. My thoughts and prayers are with Susan and the rest of his family. Ernie: you will be missed by so many friends, family members, and colleagues. You clearly lived your life well.

He brought many smiles to the people of Stamford while helping us all find new worlds. Hugs to each of you.

Ernie was such a caring, dynamic person who made a real impact on so many people. He was a definite presence and a changemaker at ALA> I loved his smile and marveled at his energy. When they announced his death at Council there was a gasp of disbelief. When someone is loved and respected as Ernie was, it's hard to believe that the person is good. With prayers and love, Pat Hogan

My Husband and I just returned from vacation, I opened up this mornings Advocate and saw the editorial about Ernie. We are heartbroken, to say the least, to have not been here to say goodbye to someone we have held dear to our hearts for so many years. He never let on when he would come in for his haircuts, that he was ill, was only concerned with how my husband was doing, how my family was, and how I was holding up. He was always, the kindest, most genuine person we have ever known, always a gentlemen. He will truly be missed. Our sympathy goes out to you all. xoxo Cindy and Eddie Schulte and Family

Ernie was one of the first to introduce me to Stamford Rotary in the early 90's. Dear Susan: I was shocked to find out today about Ernie's passing. When he and I meet for a two hour breakfast at the Newport Marriott, he seemed so happy, full of life and excited about retirement. Close to his heart was the teaching he did at Simmons College. We ate lunch together at Boston College every day when we were students. I was impressed to see in his obituary the fact that the eagle, the symbol of Boston College, was one of his prized collection. He and I always enjoyed each others company. There was always a peacefulness about our relationship. It was something that I will always remember. I know that God has a new mission for him and I wish him the best of success. I will keep him in my prayers and I look forward greeting him again as my favorite cousin in heaven. Cousin Philip A. DiMattia of Middletown, Rhode Island

Dear Mrs. Dimattia and Family,

Ernie was a wonderful caring and articulate man. In addition to the great, and groundbreaking working he did as a skilled librarian and academic...I was blessed in knowing him as a friend and fellow member of the State Street Debating Society.

Ernie was a very skilled speaker and a wonderful debate master who led us for many years on debate topics of important local, national, and world issues.

He gave our body a heightened sense of literary discourse and literary topics and authors of the day.

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy, I'm sorry I could not pay my personal respects to Ernie, and you his wonderful family, but he will always have my prayers, fond memories, and lifelong respect!

Dear Susan, Brian and Amy, we were so sorry to hear of your father's sickness and his fight for life. No one who has ever met Ernie will ever forget his humor, his smile, his can-do attitude..and his perseverance when confronted by a challenge. He always could find the solution to a problem -- or knew someone who could solve the problem. This intrinsic part of his personality made him irreplaceable to the Library, Rotary, each of the many Boards he served on...really, important to the blossoming of Stamford over the past 40 years. Thank you for sharing him with us all.

Ernie was the kindest man I ever met. He would not hesitate to make time in his busy schedule to speak to someone seeking his help on what most people would see as a trivial matter. His dedication to the people of Stamford, to the proliferation of the Arts and to his friends and family will be almost impossible to equal. I consider myself fortunate to have known Ernie and to have worked on a number of projects with him. My condolences to his family for this tragic loss, and to the City of Stamford for the loss of a great friend. Ernie was a true man of letters.

There was no more beloved man in Stamford. His ever-present smile lit up many a room and he was always ready to lend a hand whenever asked. We will sorely miss him, his can-do attitude and his generosity of spirit. We are blessed he chose Stamford as his home and the library as his life's passion and work.

Susan, we are so very sorry to be away during Ernie's wake and funeral. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Ernie, during the brief time we knew each other through service in the American Library Association, was a tremendous influence and literally changed the way I approached work I was doing and continue to do. Feeling a tremendous loss, but am grateful beyond words for the chance to have learned from the example he set for all of us. Deepest condolences to Susan and the family.

Ernie was an incredible friend and community leader. He will be missed on so many levels but never forgotten. Sending love and prayers to Susan, Brian and Amy and all of Ernie's family, including the wonderful staff at the Ferguson Library who had the pleasure of working with him. Kristin and Kaitlyn will miss their visits with "Uncle Ernie" but will never forget how he fostered their love of the library and of reading. We will all remember his care and love and think of him everytime we sit down with a good book.
