Eugene Evans Obituary

Eugene Evans

Memphis, TN

Eugene Evans, affectionately known to all as "Geno," departed this life on April 8, 2018 at Methodist University Hospital. He was 63 years old. Geno was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 6, 1954 to Eugene Evans and Florence Jefferson, both of whom preceded him in death. He was educated in the public schools of Detroit, attended Wayne State University and graduated from Jackson State University.

He was married to Paula Spence-Evans, M.D., for 31 years and she survives him. He is survived by one son, Eugene Blake Evans and three granddaughters, Destynie, Deijah and Dezlyne. He was preceded in death by one son, Paul Robert Sebastian, and one daughter, Mary Alice.

Geno's lifelong passion was the world of beauty. He graduated from Virginia Farrell Beauty School in 1978 and launched himself into all aspects of the beauty industry. In addition to being a stylist for 40 years, he also was a talk show host for The Geno Evans Show in 1994 that entertainingly and informatively engaged various trends and issues within the fashion industry. In addition, he hosted the Beauty Minute in which he gave tips on beauty in a one minute commercial format. He loved to teach new stylists and used his salons as a creative training ground for the next generation. His trend-setting styling expertise was recognized nationally through his work with Mizani as an educator and spokesperson. Later in life, he was fulfilling a passion for fashion design by attending the Academy of Arts in San Francisco concentrating in fashion design. He launched The Geno Evans Collection (a fashion line) in 2012.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 15, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at M. J. Edwards Funeral Home on Stage Road. The funeral will be held on Monday, April 16, at 10 a.m. at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

My condolences to the Evans family. Geno will be deeply missed. I met Geno 40 years ago, I was 10 years old and my mother took me to his hair salon and he became my hair stylist. He had a very upscale and trendy salon in Jackson, MS. He was always a trendsetter, I remember him serving champagne. I was so impressed. Over the years, we lost contact, I grew up and my parents moved away to Memphis, TN, but I never forgot the infamous Geno. My mother heard that he had moved to Memphis as well, and of course we tracked him down. He became our hair stylist again. Geno Rest IN Peace. You are in a better place, no more pain.

There is so much good, so many anecdotes, can be told about Gene. He could be as a city known to experience all four seasons in a single day...could be acerbic with hilarity. He, definitely, was an extraordinary hair artist, but he also had a brilliant mind. He was a ruler, a commander, by nature. A great friend. I will miss knowing he is somewhere in the world. Godspeed my friend. Much love, Paula - so dear, such a champion. Thank you from Gene and all of us from "back in the day." Much love to Blake, the heartbeat of Gene's heart. Prayerfully, BM

Words cannot express how I feel. We lost one of the greatest Stylist, Designer and Teacher in the world! Geno introduced to me the world of beauty on a higher level. I learned so much from him. Great Teacher! Rest in Heaven!! I can hear him now saying, " I'm good y'all". Love you forever Geno! You were so special! You spoke what you wanted and I witnessed how it would come to pass. An Awesome and Great Man of God. Thank you for believing in me! God bless Paula and their family.
