His wife and children wish to announce the passing of husband and father, Eugene Gene A. Markham, age 82, of Topeka. With his passing, he slips into our memory and into Gods presence, one of Americas greatest generation. Gene was born April 15, 1927, in Ellsworth the son of John Winferd Markham Sr. and Jeannette Arabelle Cleaver Markham. He was the last surviving member of a family of six boys who survived the great depression. Emerging from the baptism of poverty, when a stick, a ball and a red wagon were prized possessions, Gene learned those traits which so annoy us of the less fortunate baby boomers. Gene graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1945. He married Verna M. Hokr on May 22, 1949, at Ellsworth. He served in the U.S. Navy. Gene was a printer at the Topeka Capital Journal. He was an active member of Topeka Bible Church. Gene was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Natalie A. Klusener. Gene is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Verna; six children, DeLaine (Chuck) Klusener of Brentwood, TN, Drew L. (Kathy) Markham of Topeka, Debra L. (Keith) Simon of Steamboat Springs, CO, Dawn R. (Peter F. Lindner) Markham-Lindner of Topeka, Dane E. (Kim) Markham of Topeka and Danna L. (Rick) Petrik of Topeka; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and three nephews, John W. Markham III of Manhattan, Sam Markham of Tucson and Tom Markham of Phoenix, AZ. Gene was a man of uncommon common sense. One of his most memorable attributes was his ability to find solutions to problems with such ease as to be nonchalant. Also known for his wit, like a master at his craft, with a sly smile and a wink he cast his net and captured his prey. His legacy is giving hope and a future to his wife, children, and fellows, by passing on knowledge of his Savior and true Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ. Funeral services will be Wednesday, November 11, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at Topeka Bible Church. He will lie in state from noon 4 p.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6:30 8:30 p.m. at Topeka Bible Church. Interment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Topeka Bible Church or the American Diabetes Association and sent in care of the Davidson Funeral Home. Eugene A. Markham

Not sure what to say?

Gene was my grandpa. I want to mention that not only did he and grandma give me a special mother in DeLaine, but they also gave me some of my very dearest friends in my aunts and uncles. I cannot imagine life without them. I am so thankful I was in Topeka and was able to visit with gpa on Thursday and Friday. That time will always be speical, just like the thousands of times I have shared with him during the 40 years he was my grandpa. Grandma, I love you dearly, but you already know that...

I wish to thank all of you who came to my dad's visitation and funeral. So many friends, family and relatives. The love and support from colleagues has meant so much to me, as well. I am overwhelmed by the compassion shown to my family during this time. I have been sad, of course, but I know that I will again see my dad and others whom have gone before. The funeral was a time of sharing dad's life and it was a good experience to share him with those in attendance. It's been very cathartic to...

Dawn,
I am so sorry about the loss of your father. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
What a wonderful man your father must have been. The picture and the obituary are a lovely tribute to him.

Dear all,
You are each one precious to me. I was accepted by your family from a young age when I moved here from Penna. in 1969. I spent a wonderful Christmas with you and joined in a Romans Bible Study with Verna and several other TBc women. What a joy to be able to call you,'Loved.' Please know that God uses ordinary families to His glory and to show others the way to better know and serve Him. Thank you for your friendship, I will truly miss Gene very much;but I am sure He is...

Dawn, Peter and Family,
The passing of a loved one is never easy. However knowing that our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, awaits us somehow softens the blow. What a wonderful legacy your Father left to his entire family; one of commitment, faith, courage, humor and humility. May each of us learn those virtues from the lives of those that have gone on before us. We are thinking
of you today. Friends and colleagues,

Gary and Linda Kentch
