Eunice Winkler Obituary

Eunice Metcalf Winkler You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough. Joe Lewis Our beloved Eunice Metcalf Winkler- Eunie to all her family and friends - died peacefully on Friday February 15, 2013. Eunie was born March 13, 1922 in a rural Arkansas community called Walnut Springs. She was the 5th of eight children born to A.P. and Bertha Metcalf. Eunie graduated from Horatio High School 1940, salutatorian of her class of 11. Eunie graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1944 and began a career in teaching. She moved to Austin after graduation and taught at University Junior High School (located on the UT campus near 19th and Red River) from 1944-1952. Eunie met Fred Winkler in 1948 in Austin. After a year of courtship, Eunie and Fred were married on June 4, 1949. Their union lasted over 63 years. She is survived by her husband Fred Winkler. She is also survived by sister in law Jane Metcalf and by an extended family of nieces, nephews and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her son Carl, her parents and all her siblings. Fred's job with the Army Corp of Engineers took them to stations in Germany, Japan and many locations in the US. Their son Carl was born in Sacramento in 1956. The Winkler family traveled extensively and had many great adventures all over the world. In 1980, the Winkler's moved back to Austin after Fred's retirement from the civil service. Their greatest sadness was in losing their only son Carl to a sudden heart attack in 1984. Carl is and will always be greatly missed. In retirement Fred and Eunie enjoyed many varied activities including square dancing, hiking, a cruise through the Panama Canal and many long road trips in their camper, including one especially adventurous driving trip from Texas to Alaska and back. Eunie was a loving wife, mother, aunt, and friend to many people. She was a happy, kind spirited, positive person who left her mark on all who met her. She will be missed by all of us and remembered for the rest of our lives. There will be a memorial service on Wednesday February 20 at 10:00 a.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 North Lamar Blvd, Austin Texas 78705. A reception for family and friends will follow. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the American Heart Association, 10900-B Stonelake Blvd., Suite 320. Austin, TX 78759. Obituary and guestbook available online at www.wcfish.com
