Frederick Hotstream Obituary

A good and kind man… these are the words that have been expressed on the passing of Frederick Franz Hotstream, who was born April 22, 1938 and died August 10, 2023, after an extended illness. He was the son of the late John B. Hotstream and Esther Mae Aprill Hotstream, and also preceded in death by his precious daughter, Aimee Elizabeth Hotstream; his grandparents, Gustave Olaf Hotstream, Mary Franz Hotstream, Charles Neuville Aprill, Sr., and Mary Aimee Gorrondona Aprill; and his brothers-in-law, Gerald Smith and Bruce Reed. He is survived by his loving wife, Judith Kissinger Hotstream, of almost 59 years; delightful daughter, Rebecca Hotstream Birdwell; son-in-law, Christopher Birdwell; and granddaughter, Emeline Birdwell. A huge thank you to his brothers and sisters for their love and support. Fred was the second child of nine siblings, including Bro. John Hotstream, SC, Lionel (Lynne) Hotstream, Rose Mary (Barry) Gresham, Carol Smith, Sr. Jane Mary Hotstream, RSM, Aprill Reed (Howard Thompson), Neuville (Julé) Hotstream, and Stephen Hotstream; and along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and cousins. Fred had fond memories of his childhood living in Bay St. Louis, where he fished and crabbed and attended St. Stanislaus. Upon returning to New Orleans, he attended St. Aloysius, LSU, and the University of New Orleans. Fred was a very talented person who had no idea of how gifted he was. He loved beautiful things including his passion for keeping his home and garden comfortable and inviting. His love of art was shown by the vast amounts of books he read and enjoyed and by the paintings he loved hanging on the walls of his home. His talents and personality were appreciated by the work he did in his Magazine Street shop, where he turned objects into outstanding, beautiful lamps, and he also did lamp repairs. What a wonderful love of family he had for Judy, Becky, and Aimee, which he showed countless times with doing everything selfless he could for them – true love! Over the years, he served as a lector and Eucharistic Minister at both Immaculate Conception Church on Baronne St. and St. Rita's Church. His diversity included coaching girls' softball with Carrollton Boosters, and he also served as President of both Mercy Academy's PTA and the State Street Dr. Neighborhood Assoc. Fred was quite a remarkable writer and sometimes preferred writing a handwritten letter to family members instead of telephoning. Every week, while his daughter, Becky, was living in Houston, he would write her a letter ending by saying, "Do Good; Be Good". As a tribute to this wonderful man, we will do our very best to "Do Good; Be Good". He will be cherished and loved forever… Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at 12:00PM. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 10:00AM. The interment will be privately held at Cypress Grove Cemetery. It´s with deep sorrow that I read of the passing of Fred. I´ve known the entire family most of my life as we were neighbors and friends for many years. I´ve also known Judy for as long if not longer. May the Lord comfort you in this trying time.
I´m residing in NC currently and will miss the service and the visitation. May you find comfort thru Gods grace in this time of sorrow.
