Frederick Malvin Obituary

Frederick Bage Malvin, 89, passed away Friday, February 4, 2022 in Williamsburg. He was born in Syracuse, New York on October 3, 1932, the second child of Robert Bage and Mary Ross Malvin. His father had entered the country through Ellis Island in the early 1900's to live the American dream. Fred's parents moved from Syracuse to Norfolk, VA in the mid-forties. He attended Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, PA, where he excelled academically and in athletics, being an undefeated wrestler in league competition for three years. He received his accounting degree from William & Mary in 1955, having been selected to intramural all-star teams in football, softball and wrestling. He earned his Master's Degrees from George Washington and the Naval War College and took advanced tax law courses from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law. Following a 22-year career in Naval Aviation where he logged over 5000 flight hours and was Commanding Officer of Navy bases in the Bahamas and Norfolk, he retired in 1980. His joy of flying was tempered by the loss of squadron mates in his first duty assignment in Newfoundland. In three years, 24 companions died trying to overcome the worst weather conditions imaginable. Sitting for the CPA exam 25 years after graduation, he passed all parts on his first attempt. Founding the CPA firm of Malvin, Riggins & Co. in 1986, with Joyce Riggins Schaffer, he served as its Board Chairman until his retirement. He was repeatedly picked by his peers as a Virginia Super CPA. In April 2014, Fred was selected as one of the top five Virginia Small Business Military Veterans of the year. In February 2017, he was honored by William & Mary as an Alumni Medallion recipient. A strong believer in helping others and giving back to the community, he was Past President of the Virginia Peninsula Boys and Girls Clubs, as well as Past Chairman of the Club's Foundation, and was selected as the Board Member of the year by the Virginia/DC area Leadership Council. He was also Chairman of the Peninsula Drug Rehabilitation Services and the Friends of the Homeless. He served on the board of the William & Mary Tribe Club; was Past Chair of the William & Mary Olde Guarde Council; Past Treasurer of the William & Mary Alumni Society (Williamsburg Chapter); the St. Stephen Episcopal Church Foundation; and the William & Mary Muscarelle Museum Foundation. He was an active member of the Tribe Century Club; The Fourth Century Club; Order of the White Jacket; The Robert Boyle Society; The James Blair Society; and the Quarterback Club. He was treasurer of American Legion Post 39; the Virginia Peninsula Military Officers Association; Dreamcatchers; and the Waterman's Museum. Always living on the edge, he overcame the effects of prostate cancer and several other abdominal surgeries. He enjoyed travel and seeing other cultures, spending several weeks in Tomsk, Siberia, assisting with Operation Smile. With his wife Donna, he also escorted World War II veterans on Honor Flights to Washington, DC. He and Donna visited most of the National Parks in the US West and Canada and even drove to Alaska twice on the Alcan Highway to see the wonders of Denali and Kenai. Despite several personal tragedies he lived life to the fullest, spending a good part of his adult years devoted to charitable endeavors. Fred was predeceased by his parents; daughter, Cynthia Cameron Blocker; son, Jonathan Scott Malvin; and his sister, Janet Robinson. He is survived by his loving wife, Donna Wright Malvin; his son, Robert of Kenai, AK; Donna's children, Gena and Eddie Sisson and their daughter Meredith; his granddaughter, Cameron Lee Blocker; and sister, Donalda Dally. I am so sorry for the loss of this wonderful man. How I have fond memories of he and my Dad, Charles Beard, wearing their Boston Scallies and looking so dapper.

You will be sorely missed. Hugs and peace to one and all.

I had the honor of working at MRC, getting to shoot the breeze with Fred in the hallways occasionally. He was always smiling, quick witted, and sharp as a tack. Once I mentioned my affinity for flying, we never ran out of something to talk about. It was truly a pleasure witnessing how much the community adored him. Although brief in the grand scheme, I am thankful for the time I got to share with Fred. Bless his family.
