Frederick Fayette Rung

Frederick Fayette Rung, age 86, went to be with the Lord on June 25, surrounded by family.

He was born October 16, 1931 in Rome, New York to Frederick W. and Pernal (Fox) Rung. Fred grew up in Rome, attending Fort Stanwix Elementary and graduating high school from Rome Free Academy in 1949. He went on to study engineering at Clarkson and Syracuse Universities. Fred served his country from 1954 to 1956 in the US Army during the Korean War era. He went on to work for the United States Air Force as a Mechanical Engineer for 35 years, retiring in 1990 from Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Fred began working for the USAF at Griffiss AFB in Rome. He led a fairly quiet life, participating in a local bowling league and golfing. Fred met and married the love of his life, Katherine (Kay) Spaulding and they started their family in Rome. After ten years, his job brought him to Mount Holly, NJ for two years he was then transferred to San Antonio in 1978. Fred spent his retirement years traveling with Kay, exploring his passion for cooking, golfing, and serving his church in various capacities.

Fred was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, who passed suddenly earlier this year, and his sister Nancy, in 2012. He is survived by his daughter Carolyn, son Steven and grandchildren Christine, Spencer and Sarah.

A visitation will be at Sunset Funeral Home on Friday June 29th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be at King of Kings Lutheran Church on Saturday June 30th at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery is scheduled on July 5th at 10:30 a.m.
