Frederick Schulman Obituary

Frederick Charles Schulman of Metairie, Louisiana, was born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 15, 1939 to Abraham Schulman and Pearl Mowitz. Frederick (also known as Fred, Poppie, and The Dog) attended grade school at Yeshiva in Brooklyn, New York before moving to New Orleans in 1951. His family enrolled him in Chamberland Hunt Military Academy, where he spent countless hours in the library studying all subjects with an emphasis on history. His studies awarded him a merit scholarship. After attending Tulane University, he went into the family sales business. In 1970, he co-founded Pearl's Place Bridal Boutique. Fred was ahead of his time with everything technological. Pearl's Place was the first Bridal Boutique to be added to the world wide web in 1995! Fred worked at the family business for 52 years and up until his hospitalization. Pearl's Place was very much his life, and he was proud to have built one of the largest Bridal Boutiques in the United States. "Fred was a renaissance man. His hobbies were the world." Outside of reading and computers; Fred was an avid collector of movies, cars, watches, wine, art, books.... Fred was a traveler. Fred was a foodie. "The Dog" was a great storyteller. He had a joke for every occasion. Fred was in the Air Force reserves, was active in local politics, was the president of the Kenner Bond Board, worked for Jimmy Carter, and helped in the founding of "Fat City." Fred had beautiful big blue eyes, and he was tough as nails behind them. His words were sharper than the sharpest, but his heart would do anything for anyone (after a bit of complaining). His family was closer than any for the duration of their lives. They were together every day. Not many people can say that. He is survived by the love of his life, Elaine Cohen Schulman. Elaine stood by his side for 56 years. He is also survived by his daughter, Courtney Renee Schulman; son, Jordan Stone Schulman; daughter-in-law, Jessica Hijuelos Schulman; grandchildren, Silar Tate Schulman and Sawyer Stone Schulman; sister-in-law, Susan Rae Shushan; brother-in-law, Elliot David Shushan; nephew, Dr. Scott Ryan Shushan (wife: Tina Spaic); grand-niece, Esme Spaic Shushan; and countless other family members and friends near and far. Special thanks to the empathetic team at Heart of Hospice in East Jefferson General Hospital, and to Dr. Jayne Gurtler for the extra 40 years of life. Relatives and friends are invited to the visitation at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Tuesday, January 25, 2022 from 11:00AM until 12:00PM. The funeral service will begin at 12:00PM in the chapel of the funeral home. The interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery. I´m sad to see that Fred passed in 2022. I knew him back in the late 70´s and early 80´s when my family opened a video store called "Video Spectrum" in 1978. Fred was one of our first customers. He loved electronics and movies. He was a bit of a character! It was by accident that I saw his online bio. I haven´t thought of him in many years. I´m glad I saw his obituary. God Bless Fred. Hope heaven is treating you well.
