Dr. Howard had a profoundly positive impact on my life and trajectory in mathematics. He introduced me to the beautiful world of number theory at a time when I wasn't sure if I had a place in mathematics. He showed me much kindness, and from our interactions I learned how important it is to meet students where they are in order to help them grow. Fred Howard was my colleague for many years. I had nothing but the greatest respect and admiration for him. He set high standards for himself and for his students.
