Fredric Howard Obituary

Howard, Fredric Timothy

May 17, 1939 - September 26, 2022

Fredric Timothy Howard died at home Monday, September 26, 2022. He was born May 17, 1939, in Fort Worth, TX. His parents were John and Anna Goerner Howard.

He held degrees in mathematics from Vanderbilt and Duke Universities and taught at Wake Forest for 40 years. He especially enjoyed his work with the graduate program and staying in touch with former students. He was an active researcher and a past president and emeritus board member of the Fibonacci Association, an international research group.

He is survived by his wife, Gail Walker Howard, whom he met at Duke. Other survivors are his brother, John Louis Howard of Tyler, TX; sister, Virginia Howard of New Orleans, LA; nephews, John and Robert Howard; and grand-niece, Serrin Hyman-Howard.

Fred was an avid tennis player and, upon retirement, a serious student of history. He will be sorely missed. Online condolences may be made at www.salemfh.com.

Dr. Howard had a profoundly positive impact on my life and trajectory in mathematics. He introduced me to the beautiful world of number theory at a time when I wasn't sure if I had a place in mathematics. He showed me much kindness, and from our interactions I learned how important it is to meet students where they are in order to help them grow. Without his guidance and encouragement, I would not be where I am today.

Throughout the years he remained a reliable and trusted mentor. It was always a pleasure to visit him and Mrs. Howard in Winston-Salem and to keep in touch via email. I am so grateful that he was a part of my life, and I extend my most sincere condolences to his family.

He was so sensitive, caring and compassionate, and had the most delightful sense of humor. With his wit and wisdom, his students were fortunate to have had him as their teacher. I am so proud to be his sister. He will forever be with me in my heart.

Fred Howard was my colleague for many years. I had nothing but the greatest respect and admiration for him. He set high standards for himself and for his students. He lived up to those standards as a superb teacher and an internationally recognized mathematician, and he gave generously of his time to help his students meet those standards. Even given all of his impressive professional achievements, I will remember him best for his kindness and his excellent sense of humor. I am most thankful that I had the opportunity to know him and work with him. My deepest condolences to Gail and to the rest of Fred's family.
