Gene MERTZ Obituary
Gene was born on November 16, 1927 in the San Gabriel Valley, CA. He served in the US Navy and was a WWII Veteran. In 1988, he moved to Spokane Valley and accepted a position as a mechanical engineer at Hewlett-Packard where he worked until he retired in 1994.
Gene married Elaine in 1966 and they had one child together, Mark. Gene was a wonderful husband, father, granddad, and great granddad. He was involved in Amateur Radio Emergency Service, ARES, and helped with Bloomsday and other events. His call sign was KE7HHL.
Gene enjoyed boating, duck hunting, fishing, and amateur radio, otherwise called Ham Radio. He was involved in digital recording devices that were involved in the space shuttle program. His family and friends will always remember him as an intelligent, kind, and generous person.
Gene is survived by his wife Elaine; his grandsons: Scott and wife Elena, Jason and wife Fern, and Tim and wife Stephanie; his great grandchildren Vincent, Luciana, Miles, Cecilia and Casey. He is preceded in death by his son, Mark.
A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 pm on July 23rd at Hazen & Jaeger Valley Funeral Home, 1306 N. Pines Rd., Spokane Valley, WA with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Gene's life.

I got to work with Gene at HP. He was a wonderful mentor to me and taught me so much personally and professionally. Gene was always a joy to be around. I can't think of him without a smile on my face.

Gene was the best man at our wedding in 1992, a true gentleman with a wonderful sense of humor! He also was a mentor at our jobs at Hewlett-Packard where we worked side by side until he retired!

It was a pleasure and an honor to read Gene's background, which up till now I did not know fully. Thank you Gene for the service you gave your country.
I recall Gene being one of the Net Controllers for the weekday morning 7:30 bunch net. He was always excited about visits to, or visits by the grandkids. You could hear how much that conversation would light him up and how happy he was to have them.
I'm sure Gene's experience and wisdom will be missed. I sure missed him on the net.
May Gene have the kind of peace he always sought for others and find his new place more wonderful than he could imagine.
