B.W. Foster Funeral Home - Portsmouth Obituary

Cooper, George William Jr. (Billy)

8/31/1945-11/19/2022

It is with profound sadness that the family of George W. Cooper, Jr. announce his passing on November 19, 2022 at the age of 77.

He will be remembered by his wife of 48 years, Karen; his two children: George W. Cooper III (Trey) and Kimberly Brooke Morris; grandchildren: Avery Sterling Bray, Jaxson Ernest Cooper and Reid Benson Cooper.  He was very much looking forward to welcoming his 4th grandchild this March.  He leaves behind two brothers, Bobby Cooper and Gene Cooper, along with numerous relatives and friends.

Billy was predeceased by his parents George W. Cooper, Sr. and Amy Cooper and his brother Jerry Cooper.  We take comfort in knowing that they have all now been reunited.

Growing up, Billy loved the outdoors, was an expert archer and marksman, and a proud Eagle Scout with over 43 merit badges.

A graduate of Christopher Newport College, Billy taught archery at the College and went on to serve his Country in the Airforce, training military dogs.  He continued his passion for dogs after the Air Force, showing and breeding multiple Grand Champion Dobermans and Miniature Pinschers.  His retired Grand Champion Lizzy was by his side until the very end.

Billy retired from State Farm Insurance after 43 years.  He had grown a very successful agency over the years, and he did so despite always putting his family and children first.  He never missed a soccer game for either child all the way up through their Collegiate years.

He loved to travel and especially loved his visits to Italy, Greece and Portugal.  Billy had beaten imminent death in 2002 with a successful kidney transplant from his son Trey.  Over the last few years, Billy fought a valiant and courageous fight with Frontotemporal Dementia.  His wife Karen was by his side in this battle every day.  While the dementia could wear him down both physically and mentally, he would always light up when his grandchildren entered the room.  In October, he was able to make the trip to Mexico to see his daughter Brooke get married.  His legacy will live on for years through his children and grandchildren, he is without pain now and with the Lord.

A graveside service will be held 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, December 6, at Olive Branch Cemetery, 2 Cpl. J. M. Williams Ave., Portsmouth. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.

Not sure what to say?

Bill and I worked in the same office for decades, along with Ron Kelley. We were the only "trio" of State Farm agents working under the same roof in the entire North American continent (he would find that funny, but it was true!). Bill was a dedicated father, a fantastic salesman, a calm and friendly presence, and just a pleasure to work alongside all those years. It's hard to believe he's gone... My associate Carrie misses him, too, and always tells stories about Bill even though we...

I had the chance to work with George Cooper or "Bill" as he like to be called for a short period of time during his long illustrious career with State Farm. He made an impact on the community that he served and to the people that he employed. My thoughts go out to his wife Karen, their children, and grandchildren during this time of grieving.

Karen and family,
Please accept Pat's and my condolences in the passing of Bill. Bill was the first person I met when we started with State Farm. We shared our office for two years and learned and supported each other during some very trying times. He was a good guy and will be missed.
Again our condolences to you and your entire family.

Dear Karen and Family, Please know we are thinking of you during this sad time. We have many fond memories of Bill coaching his Kempsville soccer teams back in the day. He was such a great coach, mentor, and a positive influence on my sons and many others on and off the soccer field. We are so grateful of having known him as a neighbor and friend. God bless. Mary Lou and Tom Brown and family

I would like to share a memory about Bill who was one in a million kinda guy. We were having a breakfast meeting at a high end hotel with several agents headed up by our agency manager. When we had a break I went to the men´s room and returned back to continue the meeting as Bill set next to me I realized my ring was missing. I told Bill about it. He immediately said come on let´s find it. He asked me where I went and he said search the hallway first. Then he asked me what I did next. I told...

I knew all of the Cooper boys as well as their parents. Sorry to learn of Billy's passing. I worked with Karen at WBD and my thoughts and prayers are with her and his family at this difficult time.
