George S Pappas

George Pappas was an important person in my life, as a mentor and a friend. He had heard in 1970 that I had some promise and offered me and two others an individual study course on the philosophy of George Berkeley, a topic on which he was internationally recognized. He taught me how to do "close, careful philosophical analysis," a phrase that has always ever since defined how I do philosophy. We were fortunate to have George as a professor as graduate students. I am forever grateful for his guidance as my advisor and friend. He went above and beyond duty for both of us, helping us to find jobs and opportunities in our careers. He was kind and (fairly) patient! He took our work seriously and made it much better. Rest in Peace George. As a fraternity-brother, one year behind me, I recall his contributions to what made us the outstanding Frat at Gburg and among all of the Phi Sig Brotherhood nationwide.

Dear Christine and Sara: Ann and I are very sorry to hear this news. We live mostly outside of Chapel Hill now, but return often to Columbus to see our kids and grandchildren, who live on Vernon.
