Gerson Yessin Obituary

YESSIN Dr. Gerson Yessin, age 88, passed away on January 25, 2017, at Cypress Village in Jacksonville, FL. He was born on January 25, 1929, in Malden, MA, to David and Ada Yessin and has been a resident of the Jacksonville area since 1958. Since his debut at the age of seventeen with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra, Gerson Yessin has concertized extensively and has appeared on numerous nationwide television programs. In addition to more than thirty-five appearances with the Boston Pops Orchestra, he has been heard as a soloist with other major orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, the San Francisco Symphony and the Jacksonville Symphony. He was the first pianist to receive two Olga Samaroff Grants. In addition to recording with Leopold Stokowski Bartok's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, he produced nine albums of piano solos for the National Federation of Music and has made numerous recordings of piano compositions. He has given piano-teacher workshops throughout the United States, including national and regional Music Teacher conventions. He presented a concert at the Leopoldskrone Palace in Salzburg, Austria and gave a two-week Chopin Seminar sponsored by the International Workshops. He was the recipient of Award of Merit from the National Federation Music Clubs for the promotion of American music. He was voted by his colleagues as Distinguished Professor of the Year and was invited as a Visiting Professor of Music at Florida State University. He devoted his life to music by serving on at least 20 different committees at the University of North Florida such as the UNF Council of the Arts of which he founded and coordinated. His many appearances on local radio and television programs assisted various local organizations. In his retirement he continued to devote his time to music by teaching young promising children to play the piano. Dr. Yessin received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Juilliard School of Music and his Doctor of Music from Florida State University. He was Founding Chair of the Music Department at Jacksonville University in 1959, and Founding Chair of the Music Department and Professor of Music at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville from 1971 until he retired in 1998. Dr. Yessin was predeceased by his son, Gary Yessin in 2016, and is survived by his wife of 46 years, Anne B. Yessin of Jacksonville, FL, two step-sons, Thomas E. Ewart III (w. Renate W. Ewart) of Tallahassee, FL, Richard Lee Ewart of Venice, FL, and a step-daughter, Nancy E. Shockey (h. David Shockey) of Staunton, VA, and his sister, Evelyn Robinson of Colorado. He also leaves two grandsons, Adam Ewart and Benjamin Shockey. The family requests that memorial gifts be designated to cancer research at Mayo Clinic in Florida. I studied piano with Dr.in the 80's at UnF ..He was more if a listener then teacher...He would listen to what you played and would say that is fine..That was it..how ever u spend many hours practicing and then u did the master class..I remember Loran Hollindes visit in 1984..He would tell us what we did wrong ..Before attending UnF I studied with Mrs Land at FCCJ ..Piano pedagogy and performance ..She was wonderful. So I did well With Dr.Yessin..I now play at three churches and at times with the NEPA symphony...My life as pianist has been wonderful ...I'm here to thank Dr Yessin for his helping me with my career..God bless you in heaven and your family as well

Dr. Yessin was a great pianist as well as person for whom I am eternally grateful for having the opportunity of working with at UNF. I'll never forget his dedication to practicing 4 to 6 hours a day for a performance. Students would peek in to hear a sneak performance of an upcoming event. He was more than a department chair, he was a kind, caring and true friend to all that ever knew him. Someone that you can depend on. May you rest in peace. You are sorely missed.

I was lucky enough to study piano with Dr. Yessin as a high school student. He was an inspirational piano teacher and guided me through many Beethoven sonatas. Also, he was such a kind man and consummate musician. He was a huge presence in the Jacksonville music community for many years. All of us classical music lovers in Jacksonville are lucky that a musician of his stature and accomplishment was here to influence our music culture for so many years. His passion and enthusiasm will be missed.

I am just now learning of Dr. Yessin's passing and am so sorry. I studied with him in the early 1960s at Jacksonville University, where my husband, Rem, was an assistant professor of philosophy. He was a very fine musician, teacher, and person.

I was saddened to learn today of the passing of Gerson Yessin. I had the privilege of working with him during my 7 years at the University of North Florida (UNF). Gerson was the consummate professor. He was a magnificent performer and tireless worker for the Music Department at UNF. Gerson was always a gentleman and contributed greatly to the performing arts in the Jacksonville Community. He was a soft-spoken but very deliberate representative of the Music Department and University. My wife Barbara and I missed him a great deal after leaving UNF in 2000. He had great wisdom, which he shared freely and openly, and I learned a great deal from him. I wish Anne and his family the very best during this difficult time. Indeed, we were fortunate to know him.

I'm so very saddened to hear of Dr. Yessin's passing. Such a very kind gentleman, caring mentor, and brilliant musical artist. I count myself among the lucky to have been one of his students at the UNF music program and one of the many who admired his musicianship. Dr. Yessin supported and helped make possible several opportunities and achievements I enjoyed while a student, and during these last few years, brought me in with my jazz group to perform for the Ponte Vedra Library concert series. My lasting memory will be of seeing his kind smile one more time as he enjoyed our music. Dr. Yessin will be forever cherished and fondly remembered. He made such a lasting, positive difference in the lives of so many people. I am forever grateful.
