Gilbert Copeland Obituary

Gilbert "Gil" E. Copeland passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2017, at the age of 83. Gil was born on May 28, 1934 in New Orleans. At an early age, Gil worked as a carhop for Morning Call and as a short order cook in the French Quarter. He eventually learned the doughnut business as a teen in Chicago. And in his early twenties, he returned to New Orleans, opening his own doughnut shop, Tastee Donuts. Gil became a franchising pioneer, developing nearly 50 stores throughout the country. He later sold Tastee Donuts and became a minority stockholder in Popeyes Fried Chicken, which he helped found with his brother Al Copeland. Gil saw great growth potential on the north shore of West St. Tammany Parish where he began investing in real estate. He then developed retail shopping centers and many other commercial real estate ventures. As a result, he became one of the area's most respected developers and property management entrepreneurs on the north shore. Gil was passionate about collecting and restoring antique cars and street rods. Gil is preceded in death by his parents William A. Copeland, Jr and Augusta Marie Comeaux Copeland; brothers William A. Copeland, III and Al Copeland, his first wife Catherine Wells Goldstein; dear friend and cousin Sterling "Buddy" Comeaux, Jr. Gil is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Laura Bergeron Copeland; his sons Gilbert E. Copeland, Jr., Brad Allen Copeland, Austin William Copeland and Wade Adam Copeland; his sister in law Jean O' Steen Copeland, (Mrs.William A. Copeland) and Pookie Rouiter Comeaux, (Mrs. Sterling Comeaux, Jr.) his father in law Emile A. Bergeron and mother in law Sandra F. Bergeron; 30 nieces and nephews, 30 great nieces and nephew and 12 great great nieces and nephews of the Copeland, Comeaux and Bergeron families. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass on Monday, August 21, 2017 at 12:00pm at St. Angela Merici Catholic Church, 901 Beverly Garden Dr., Metairie, LA. There will be a visitation beginning at the church at 10:00 am. Interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery. For those so desiring, donations may be made in Gil's memory to Al Copeland Foundation, alcopelandfoundation.org. Mr.Gil lived an exceptional life. The last time I saw him was at Lakeview Grocery. He laughed & said, "If I don't die soon, nobody's going to be at my funeral... Everybody's Dying!"
Imagine Heaven when Al, their parents & Friends will all be there to greet him when he enters those pearly gates. Our Loss is Heaven Rejoicing.
My Sincere, Heartfelt Sympathy to Laura, Austin, Wade, Brad & Gil.

Laura,

Please accept my sympathy at the loss of your husband Gil. I really liked and respected Gil.
I first meet Gil in 1968 when we established our first Tastee Donut shop with his help and the help of Dick Aleff, his assistant.

Gil and I worked together to open 3 new Tastee Donut shops; one in Cape Girardeau, MO, one on the Westbank Expressway in Gretna, and another in Baton Rouge.

He really had a wonderful knowledge of the fast food business and a very fine sense of humor. I still remember him taking me across the street from his office on Veterans Highway to an older small donut shop, which was closed. He and his brother Alvin were using the building to test a spicy chicken. That was the beginning of the famous Popeyes Fried Chicken.

The last time I talked to Gil was shortly after Alvin passed away and we had a very nice visit.

Strange as it may sound, I was just thinking of Gil the other day and was wondering how he was doing.

Please accept the small memorial I'm sending to the funeral home for the Al Copeland Foundation and my sincere sympathy to you and your family. We certainly will miss him.

Dear Gil i'll never forget the day you walked into my restaraunt until the last day i was there to help care for you. I shared w many people that my favorite part of the day was sharing talking and stories with you outside your house, wether it was raining, which u loved so much or just resting in the sunshine. I miss you wholeheartedly and will never forget what an incredibly nice gentleman you always were and the beautiful smile you always held.
