Glenn McCarthy Obituary

Glenn H. McCarthy, Jr.
1938-2017
Glenn H. McCarthy, Jr. passed away peacefully on Thursday, the 12th of January 2017, in Houston. He was 78 years of age.
Mr. McCarthy was born on the 12th of August 1938, in Houston, to the oil wildcatter and hotelier, Glenn H. McCarthy and Faustine Lee McCarthy. Mr. McCarthy is preceded in death by his parents as well as his sisters Mary Margaret Davis, Glenna Lee Satterfield, and Faustine Lee Garbrecht. He is survived by his only child, Glenn H. McCarthy III, and former wife, Frances Rader McCarthy, both of Houston. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Leah McCarthy McCurry, of Houston; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws. He will be remembered as an outstanding father, brother, uncle, and friend to many.
Mr. McCarthy received his B.B.A. degree from Sam Houston State University in 1962, and the Juris Doctor degree from South Texas College of Law in 1967. He began his law practice that year, working first in general law then specializing in real estate and oil and gas law.
He was a great pilot. Flying was very important to him. His love for flying started as a boy, playing in the plane his father purchased from a dear family friend, Howard Hughes, Jr. Mr. McCarthy would frequently fly his family to and from their beautiful ranch near Uvalde, Texas.
His career in the oil and gas industry began before he finished high school. In 1959, he became president of McCarthy Oil and Gas Corporation. During its existence, the corporation's exploration efforts have yielded over 800 producing wells and discovered 16 new oil and gas fields and 15 major extensions of existing oil and gas fields. McCarthy also served as president and principal owner of MTH Construction Company and served as vice president, president and chairman of the board of Tenroc Corporation, and served as chairman of The Shamrock Hotel Corporation. Mr. McCarthy was involved in numerous professional law and petroleum industry organizations and charitable causes. He was a member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He was a Mason, a Shriner, and a Scottish Rite.
A memorial service celebrating his life is to be conducted at ten o'clock in the morning on Wednesday, the 18th of January, at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay Street in Houston, where Pastor Andy Cunningham is to officiate.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of customary remembrances, and for those desiring, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in his name be directed to Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay St., Houston, TX 77024; to Richmond State School, 2100 Preston St., Richmond, TX, 77469; or to the charity of one's choice.

He was my cousin but we were not very close. I only saw him on various family occasions.

So sorry to hear of Glen's passing. We were in Lamar HS class of 1957. Glen was part of the group including Jimmy Murphy, Sam Finley, Buddy Huff, Bunky Dishron, Jimmy Franklin, Neil Picket, J. Roberts, my big brother, Joe Williams and myself. I lost touch with Glen and most of the group when I went off to Navy Flight training. Glen took up flying, we had a common desire to become pilots. Glen was a good person We spent many teenage years playing poker, hunting and dating the Lamar beauties. Looking for Glen to contact him to say hello when I found the obit. Should have acted sooner.

To the McCarthy family:

It is with heavy hand and heartfelt regrets that I write to express my profound sympathies and deepest condolences regarding the loss of Glenn, Jr. My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this most difficult time.

I fondly remember Glenn as a great friend and very special man. We shared many laughs and good times together. I will always remember him with a twinkle in his eyes, a beautiful smile and quick humor. He taught me so many things and I will never forget him.

Glenn III and Leah, I know you will remember the many blessings of the beautiful years you shared with Glenn. He loved you both so very much. I truly hope that your family will find comfort in all of the good times that you shared together.

I am sorry to hear of your loss, Glenn III. I would like to visit with you and tell you about your family in the Republic of Texas. Glenn Jr. and I discussed it at the Yacht Club over lunch about 8 years ago, he was most anxious to learn about it all. I am a cousin. You can refer to your aunt Betty Leah Frank, she knows me well.

Condolences to Glen III. I knew your father well. We went to Lamar H.S. together and I was also friends with your grandfather and grandmother. Went to the mansion many times.
Last time I visited with your dad we had a great time reminiscing about our younger years. Your father was a really great guy to know and be friends with. I will always remember him fondly.

Leah. Thinking of you at this sad time. I had no idea you are now the only surviving sibling. Thomas Gene (Hudgins) just called and wants to reach out to you. I had to tell him I did not have your phone number. Know he and I are with you in our thoughts at this time.

I had the opportunity to interview Mr. McCarthy several times in the mid-'90s for a prominent place in my book, The Oil Makers, An Insider's Perspective of the Petroleum Industry. He was a very kind and thoughtful man who was quite candid about his experiences and very generous with his time. I regret that I had not been able to stay in touch with him through the years.

My favorite memory of Glenn is from when we were 5 or 6. He took a $10 bill out of his Mom's purse and asked my Mom to drive us to a store in West University. He went into the store and when he came out he had a Doll for me, he said he wanted me to have that doll. My Mom made him go tell Mrs. McCarthy what he had done. She said it was OK. I was the happiest girls in the world. I have so many wonderful Memories of being part of the family.

Leah: Joe and I were sad to hear of Glenn's death. Joe played handball with Glenn frequently at the downtown "Y"; and, visited with him occasionally at the Courthouse.

I fondly remember the happy times you and I had through our school years.

We hope you are well.
