Gorst duPlessis Obituary

Gorst H. duPlessis, Radiologist, Artist, and Master Ornamental Woodturner, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2015 at Passages Hospice, New Orleans, La. He was 77 years old. Born in Walton on Thames, Surrey, UK, Gorst was preceded in death by his father, Adriaan Foster duPlessis and his mother, Helen May Hubball duPlessis; He is survived by his sister Heloise duPlessis Louw, (Peter d.) (Johannesburg, South Africa); brother John Jacob duPlessis (Nancy d.) (Oklahoma City); his wife, Andrea Larson duPlessis, son Andre Marc duPlessis (Kim), daughter Renee duPlessis Bestor (Cash); Grandchildren, Brennan and Legend Bestor, Derek and Luc duPlessis, Colin and Patrick Graham; nephews Andre Louw (Ros), Francois Louw (Jacqui), nieces Michelle Louw Burton (Marc), Deborah duPlessis, grand nieces, grand nephews and one great grandnephew. Gorst attended Arcadia Primary School and Christian Brothers College in Pretoria, S.A. where he participated in water polo, swimming, and rugby teams. He worked in South African copper and gold mines, and in business, before leaving South Africa in 1959 to come to the U.S. After working full time at an insurance company while attending Oklahoma City University, Gorst graduated in 1964 with honors of Blue Key, the President's and the Dean's Honor Rolls. He entered Oklahoma University Medical School, graduating in 1968, and accepted an internship at Presbyterian Hospital (previously Stanford Lane Hospital) in San Francisco. Following his internship and a residency in pathology at Presbyterian Hospital, he completed a residency in Diagnostic Radiology, having trained at Highland County General Hospital, Oakland, Cal.; University of California, San Francisco, Cal.; Children's Hospital, Oakland, Cal., and Alta Bates Hospital, Berkley, Cal. He brought his family to New Orleans in 1977 and for many years was chief radiologist at Ochsner-St.Anne Hospital in Raceland, La. Gorst retired in 2013, bringing to a close his medical career of 43 years. In retirement Gorst found opportunity to expand and develop the intense interest in woodworking that had inspired him ever since the 1950's. Throughout his lifetime he had expressed creativity not only in woodworking but in sculpture and building furniture. For the last 20 years he had been ornamenting wood, using exotic hardwoods, precious metals, and semi-precious stones. Among the various lathes housed within his workshop, he especially treasured an 1842 Holtzapffel ornamental lathe. He also was very proud of the lathe made for him by ophthalmologist Dr. Fred Armbruster, Maine. Gorst was an extraordinary man devoted to his family, his medical career and his life as an artist. His artistic talent and creativity flourished during the last twenty years during which he was blessed with an ever-increasing 'extended family' of woodturner artists and colleagues from all across the country. It was through this extended family that he was able to more fully express his artistic talents and abilities, joy in sharing the concepts of design and skills, and the adventure introduced in new projects. Intrigued by the challenge of discovering solutions to seemingly unsolvable challenges, he saw beauty in the design of machinery and tools as well as the beauty he recognized in nature and all forms of art, ancient and modern. Gorst was represented locally by the Arthur Roger Gallery. His work is included among the permanent collections of the Smithsonian; in the New Orleans Museum of Art (he created the original spiral turned handles 62" in length that were afterwards cast in bronze, seen in the design of the gates of the museum); he created the Academic Mace that is now used in the Tulane University Graduation Ceremony; also included in the Woodturning Center of the American Association of Woodturners, Pa. and in various collections throughout the United States. Quote: "The only constant in my work is change, and relying on my intuition from previous experience and exposure. I am a student of the history of turning. I turn every day as it is the relaxation that I get in my contrast to my 'Day Job,' The Practice of Medicine. I love what I do - and what I do is the fruit of my passion." Gorst duPlessis Gorst's family gratefully expresses thanks to Tulane Medical Center, Passages Hospice, and the many friends who reached out to Gorst and the family during his final days. A celebration of life in tribute to Gorst will be scheduled on a date in late October this year. To view and sign the family guestbook, please visit www.lakelawnmetairie.com.

The late Frederic Sater (died May 17 2024) would be among the first to salute Gorst memory. He and his son Stefan and grandchild Raphael were to see Gorst at the French Quarter Fest, a meeting that sadly never happened in 2015. As lovers of Jazz may you all be united with the greats that have passed.

I was fortunate to meet Andrea and Gorst a few years back. They invited me into their home as though I was a long, lost friend. I have come to learn that they treated everyone like that. I would call Gorst quite often and I was always greeted with a friendly "How er you." He helped me over come my Rose Engine paralysis. I will forever be grateful for his friendship and honesty. When you go to NOLA, you go out to eat. This was Gorst's town and he expected to treat. It was always fun to see if you could beat him to the punch (or check I should say). He was a good sport about it. I am lucky to have known him. We all owe a great gratitude to OU. Boomer Sooners Gorst!!!!

Andrea,
Death leaves a heartache difficult to heal. Love leaves
sweet memories no one can steal.
May the sweet memories sustain and comfort you.

I'm profoundly saddened to her of Gorst's passing.
We were students together about the time he chose Medicine as his academic and professional goal. I've never known anyone with more drive and determination. Gorst's was one of those rugby prop forwards that would knock you down, then reach out and pick you up and say " nice hit mate". If ever there was "one of a kind" it would certainly be Gorst.
I remember how smitten Gorst was with Andria, and many conversations on how he was going to get on with Judge Larson.
I visited Gorst in San Francisco; he had the City figured out, and was way into collectin som of Napa's finest Cabernet. Every time I see a bottle of Heitz Cellars I think of Gorst.
God forbid that you should ever get him laughing,
(not hard to do), because you might well simply run out of breath from the joy of the experience.
The world is a poorer place, but I for one will always remember him.
Love to all who knew him!

Gorst was my friend even before Andrea, though Andrea was the light of his life and his centering pole! I loved him for all the things he was and am glad he left so many wonderful reminders of himself and his art.

I will always remember Gorst's smile and obvious happiness with his life blending his love of art and medicine.
