Gregory D. Lessig died Friday, August 11, 2023. He was born in Pen Argyl, PA on June 19, 1934. He was preceded in death by his parents, his 3 brothers and his beloved wife and friend, Doris Lessig. He is survived by 5 children and 2 stepchildren; Greg (Susan) of Lehigh Acres, FL; Mark (Lynne) of Conneaut Lake, PA; Jan Sissel (Bob Brown) of Cape May Courthouse, NJ; Lori Nanns of Woodbridge, VA; Denise Aaron (Brent) of New Ulm, TX; stepson John Kalinoski (Jacqueline) of Lusby, MD and stepdaughter Susan Kalinoski-Hill (Mark Sheridan) of Strathroy, Ontario, CA. Greg has 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his first wife and mother of his 5 children, Patricia Lessig of Lehigh Acres, FL and his sister, Dianne Frohwitter of Monroe, NC.
Greg taught, coached and served as Assistant Principal at Independence High School in Independence, OH before moving his family in 1965 to Edinboro to begin teaching at Edinboro University until his retirement in 1997. In addition to his family, Greg had many loves in his life including politics, serving on Edinboro Borough Council and as mayor for 2 decades, teaching Political Science, American Government and History, sports, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Erie Seawolves, where he was a season ticketholder with his best buddy, Don, his garden, coffee ice cream, and his dogs. Greg loved his dogs. But his greatest love was his wife, Doris. They had common values and beliefs. They were best friends and traveling companions. Greg had a habit of embellishing stories and Doris didn’t hesitate to call him out, resulting in a wry smile from him because she knew him well and he knew it.
Greg was a member of Edinboro United Methodist Church for nearly 50 years. He loved following and worshipping Jesus Christ in a body of believers that, to him, were his extended family.
Greg’s family thanks all who visited and cared for him over the last months of his life, especially the teams from AseraCare Hospice and Walnut Creek Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
The Glunt Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Edinboro, has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
A visitation will be held at Edinboro United Methodist Church, 113 High St., Edinboro, PA on Friday, August 25, 2023 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., followed by a remembrance service and inurnment at Edinboro Cemetery.
