Guy LYONS Obituary

Guy Moody Lyons passed away on Friday, the 20th of January 2012, in Houston, at the age of 85, as a result of complications following an automobile accident.
He was born to Mary Jo Feehan and Robert A. Lyons on Galveston Island (""BOI"") on the 22nd of April 1926.
After graduating from Ball High School, Guy joined the US Navy and served as a Lieutenant J.G. aboard the USS Yavapai in the Pacific. When World War II ended, Guy enrolled at Rice University and received his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1949. He then became a US Naval Aviator at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida.
In 1947, Guy met Laurita Huebner and the two were married in 1950, just before moving to California. He served in the Pacific during the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Boxer.
Guy and Laurita returned to Houston in 1953, where he enjoyed an illustrious engineering career working for several firms beginning with Bellows Construction Company, and Fish Engineering. He served as Vice President of Feasibility at Power Systems Engineering (PSE), which was later acquired by Dow Chemical, Inc., followed by Dynegy, from where he retired in 2001.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Laurita; his two daughters, Monica Lyons Torres and Deidre Lyons Vedder, PhD and her husband Wolfram. Guy and Laurita have five grandchildren: Dustin Torres, Monique Torres, Travis Vedder, Austin Vedder and Ross Vedder, along with many wonderful nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and four siblings, Robert A. Lyons, Jr., Kathryn Lyons Focke, John W. Lyons and Richard D. Lyons.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening on Wednesday, the 25th of January, in the Library and Grand Foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A Mass of Christian Burial is to be offered at ten o'clock in the morning on Thursday, the 26th of January, at St. Michael Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Road in Houston, where Fr. Douglas Guthrie is to serve as celebrant. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent Parish Life Center.
The Rite of Committal is to follow, via an escorted cortege, in the Chapel of the Oaks Mausoleum at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Mr. Lyons' name be directed to St. Michael Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Road, Houston, TX, 77056.

I have fond memories of my Power Systems, Destec and Dynegy days. Mr. Lyons was a remarkable man and always pleasant when passing in the hallways. I had not heard of his passing but happened upon this page. I pray the family has peace in the coming days and draws strength from the memories he gave them.

Guy Lyons (and Dick Laughter) hired me into Power Systems back in 1982, when I was out of work in a bad economy and needed a break. I still think of him often. Our condolences to his family on the passing of this great man.
