Harold Hoersch Obituary

Hoersch, Harold John 04/14/1918 ~ 9/20/2014 SAN DIEGO - Harold John Hoersch, 96, passed away peacefully September 20 at his home in San Diego, attended by his daughter, Dr. Gay Rudek of Riverside, and his son, Stanley Hoersch of San Diego. He was a retired restaurateur. Born April 14, 1918, in American Falls, Idaho, Harold was the third child of Rev. John Hoersch, an itinerant German Congregationalist minister, and Louise (Weber) Hoersch. Because of his father's profession, Harold spent his childhood living in various small towns in the Midwest, graduating from high school in Bazine, Kansas in 1935. He also attended college in Hays, Kansas for a year, while at the same time operating several garages/gas stations scattered throughout the surrounding farming area. Eventually, however, the lure to explore the West Coast tempted the young entrepreneur to resettle in San Diego, where he was able to find employment with Convair (later renamed General Dynamics). With the security of a steady job, Harold was able to entice Dorothy De Wald, his high school sweetheart from Kansas, to come West. The two were wed in Yuma, Arizona in 1942. In 1944, Harold and Dorothy became partial owners of the Juniper Cafe, a lunch counter with limited seating. When it became clear that World War II was winding down, the young couple made plans to develop their own family-oriented business: Harold was able to withdraw from working for Convair, and they developed their dream of opening up a restaurant which specialized in "home cooking." Over the decades, this modest start became three separate restaurants as well as the San Diego Meat Company. In between, Harold served as Vice-President of Atlas Hotels, and also President of the San Diego Restaurant Association. He was also an active member of the Lions' Club. Harold and Dorothy's original restaurant still exists as the Hob Nob Hill Restaurant on 1st Avenue and Juniper Street. Harold was predeceased by Dorothy, who died in 1991. He also outlived two older sisters (twins): Alma (Hoersch) Schlegel and Wilma (Hoersch) Wittmann of Kansas; and two younger brothers: Victor Hoersch of Quincy, Washington and Samuel Hoersch of San Diego. Besides his son Stanley and daughter Gay, Harold is survived by his son-in-law, Dr. Robert Rudek, and by his granddaughter, Sarah (Rudek) Zentner, her husband, Scott Zentner, and an infant great- granddaughter: Hannah Elizabeth Zentner, all of Riverside. He is also survived by four sisters: Esther (Hoersch) Whitehead of Tucson, Arizona; Arlene (Hoersch) Jones of East Wenatchee, Washington; Ruth (Hoersch) Jones of Spokane, Washington; Lois (Hoersch) Masterson of Bonita, California; and one younger brother: Joel Hoersch of Santee, California. A memorial service celebrating the life of Harold John Hoersch will be held in the First Presbyterian Church of San Diego's chapel at 320 Date Street near downtown on Saturday, September 27, at 1 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions in Harold's name be rendered to the First Presbyterian's "Ladle Ministry" feeding the homeless. Merkley - Mitchell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

It's now been 10 years (and 1 day!) since Dad passed - and 33 years since Mom died - yet I still think of them weekly if not daily since Robert & I are blessed to live in the home they so lovingly bought 60 years ago. What a legacy they both left of their many years in San Diego! I truly believe they both were loved by many, yet not nearly so loved as by their family, and especially by me. I will always love & appreciate you both, Mom & Dad!!

It's been 9 years since my Dad passed now - much has happened since then: my brother Stan sadly passed last year at age 75, I am now 70, husband Robert 72 and our daughter Sarah has blessed us with 2 beautiful grandkids ages 7 & 9. Life goes on but memories of my Dad (& Mom too) will always live on in my mind, especially all that I learned from them about life, working hard and doing your best at everything you attempt to do. Those are timeless lessons, learned the hard way like they learned them - maybe that's why they're timeless!
Dad, Mom & now Stan - I love you all and will someday see you in Heaven!

Another year has come & gone - now 7 years since Dad passed and yet amazingly I still miss the old guy! My husband of 46 years Robert & I frequently talk about some of the fun things we did with Mom & Dad and especially in 2009 taking Dad back to a family reunion in WA where we saw lots of our relatives. Even then - at age 91 - his mind was sharp & he liked nothing better than to tell stories and talk about times in the past.
I will always have great memories of my Dad and consider myself a very fortunate daughter!

My Dad was in many ways my "Hero" throughout my life. He had many faults - who doesn't? - but what I loved most about him was his "can do!" spirit and in spite of life's difficulties, never complained. His & my Mom's strong work ethic always inspired me to work hard at everything I did and expect to succeed. It was OK to fall down, as long as you got back up afterwards and went at it again. Both Dad & Mom really cared about people - including their employees at the restaurants - and did everything they could, financially & otherwise, for those they loved. My Dad loved to laugh and especially loved telling jokes: to family, friends and even customers sometimes. I wouldn't be surprised if right now he's telling St. Peter some corny joke right now in Heaven!!
Love & miss you Dad!

Crawford, I worked with your Dad at Harolds Fifth Ave. While Sam oversaw the kitchens of the three restaurants your Dad was second in command. Nice guy. I was just a young kid but learned a lot from all of them.

Had lunch at the Hob Nob (formerly Dorthys Oven) a few days ago.

My Dad, Bob Crawford, worked for Mr. Hoersch at the Melody Grill. Our family knew him, his wife Dorothy, brother Sam and son Stanley. May he Rest in Peace.

One year has passed. Seems like an instant. Harold thanks for the life experiences that i received as a young man and used them well in my life.

This reminds me of Uncle Harold:
"If you do not go after go after what you want, you will never have it. If you do not ask, the answer will always be NO. If you do not step forward, you will always be in the same place."

There were so many of you who worked with Harold at the Hob Nob Hill, Dorothy's Oven, and Harold's Fifth Ave and collectively you all added to his success.
I remember my mother telling me that when the restaurant was first starting, she and my dad would go to the restaurant after they got off work to help clean the place. They volunteered to help Harold & Dorothy's business because they believed in them and wanted to help family. I am sure they received a great meal after!

I attended the funeral and signed in for three of us who all had their first formal part time jobs washing pots and pans at Harold's Fifth Ave. Sadly there was no mention of those restaurants and I realize it was so long ago but hundreds if not thousands of people went through Harold's employment over the decades. His brother Sam was my direct boss and I learned a lot from him. Harold worked out front and greeted the guests, ever the smiling host but when he came into the kitchen he seldom smiled ands scared the hell out of this young 16 year old. I earned a $1.00 an hour and the Union wanted part of that even as a part time worker. Everyday busses downtown to work from school and after at 9.30pm or so busses out to PB and hit the school books. It was a great work/life experience for me. My wife and I still go to the Hob Nob several times a month and up until a few weeks ago I always asked about Harold. Amazing when you outlive all your friends, one would think there would be hundreds of people at the service but sadly most had long since departed this earth so just a few of us for the services.

God speed Harold.

I went to the funeral yesterday and signed for three people. All of us had first part time jobs working at Harold's Fifth Ave. A class place at the time. We did fill in downtown at the original Hob Nob and picked bakery products up at Dorothy's Oven. Hey i know i am going back years but there was no mention of any of that history at the funeral. Now live downtown and still go to Hob Nob several times a month and had just asked how Harold was a few weeks ago. I worked for his brother Sam who was a great task master. Harold was the host at the restaurant out front and was always smiling for the customers but when he came back to the kitchen he was always business and scared the hell out me as a young man of 16. Learned so much and I have always appreciated the training and the opportunity. That was so many years ago.

Farewell, Uncle Harold. We will always remember your kind hospitality (and wonderful home-style meals) at "the Hob Nob" as we passed through San Diego on family vacations. Your sister, my mother, Ruth Hoersch Jones at 84 years of age sends her love and fond memories from the assisted living facility where she now lives in Spokane due to an on-the-job hip and head injury at 81 years of age. (She was working TWO bookkeeping jobs at 81 years of age!) You Hoersch "kids" sure knew how to work and your beautiful obituary is a glowing testament to that. Mom will be so proud to read it. I will share it with her. Love, your niece, Ronna Snyder (with husband of 38 years, Bill, four grown children, assorted spouses and six grandchildren).

Gay, I went to Francis Parker with you back in the '60's. But I used to see your father at many events for years, long after my Parker days. Your dad was a wonderful man and I always enjoyed speaking to him, and your mother. I share your loss.

It was always a pleasure to see Uncle Harold and his family when a trek was made back to Kansas. His love of family and great sense of humor brightened the time my parents and I got to spend with him.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to cousins Stan and Gay (and the Rudek family), as well as to Uncle Joel, Aunt Lois, Aunt Ruth, Aunt Arlene, and Aunt Esther. Thanks to Uncle Harold and my Dad (Sam) for giving me my first paying job (other than baby-sitting) as a restaurant hostess, which helped me develop my people skills. I have fond memories of getting together at the Hob Nob Hill, the Hob Nob downtown and with all the Hoersch family aunts, uncles and cousins at Harold's Fifth Ave. May you rest in peace.
