Harry Hughes Obituary

Harry Andrew Hughes Jr.

Harry Andrew Hughes Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2024, at the age of 83.

Harry was a proud graduate of Rustburg High School and participated in basketball and track and field. After high school, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy. Following his service, he dedicated 35 years of his life to the Appalachian Power Company. Throughout his life, he was an active member of his community, participating in organizations such as the Exchange Club of Lynchburg, Moose Lodge 1727, and the American Legion. Harry also held a fondness for the outdoors and was a former member of the Lucky 13 Bass Club. His passion for fishing was unmatched, and he spent over 40 years as a bass tournament fisherman alongside his cherished fishing partner, Jerry Elder. He was a mentor to many, known affectionately by some as the "Butter Bean Man." His favorite saying was always, "Just another day in paradise".

A devoted member of Timberlake Church, Harry lived his life with a humble and kind spirit, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Andrew Hughes Sr. and Evelyn Moon Hughes; his half-brother, Bobby Hughes; and two sisters, Juanita Franklin and Janice Horn.

Harry is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, Linda Hughes; two loving daughters, Lori Siebel and Kim Hughes Crosby (Jerry); son, David Wilson (Jennifer); four cherished grandchildren, Brett (Jenna), Bailey (Joe), Brianna, and David Jr.; his sister, Shirley Tomlin; his sister-in-law, Susan VanRemortel (Jim); and numerous nieces and nephews. Harry's legacy of kindness, mentorship, and love will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 23, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Timberlake Church, located on 21649 Timberlake Road in Lynchburg. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park in Lynchburg, where Harry will receive Military Honors presented by the American Legion. Family and friends are invited to a reception at the church following the graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Timberlake Church, 21649 Timberlake Road, Lynchburg, VA 24502, or a charity of your choice. In keeping with Harry's simple and unpretentious nature, the family requests that attendees dress casually.
