HARRY POTTER Obituary

POTTER, Harry, M.D. Of Newton, passed away on May 31, 2023, at age 72. Harry was a loving husband to Betty Waxman; devoted father to Dr. Julie Potter and Dr. Carrie Potter; and sons-in-law, Vincenzo Bertoli and Dr. Colin Smith. He was a devoted grandfather to Luciano and Olivia Bertoli and Ross and Miles Smith. He was a loving brother to Jackie Potter; brother-in-law William Black; and uncle to Samuel and Daniel Black. He was a loving brother-in-law to Dr. Harvey Waxman and Susan Feldman; and uncle to Matthew and Alex Waxman. Harry was born on January 21st, 1951, in Portland, Maine, to Arnold and Selma Potter. The youngest of three siblings, Harry was known as the family sweetheart who could coax anything from his mother with a snuggle. In high school, Harry got straight A's and graduated second in his class, despite occasionally giving his teachers a run for their money. He attended the University of Michigan as an undergraduate, received a doctorate in neuroscience from MIT, and later went on to UMass Medical School. He was brilliant but also humble, preferring to introduce himself as Harry instead of Dr. Potter. He met his wife, Betty, during the sixth week of college in the lunchline, and they were a couple from that moment on. They were married at age 22 and were one month shy of celebrating 50 years of marriage when he passed away. They balanced each other perfectly, she had the ideas and he handled the details. He was always focused on doing things to make Betty's life easier. During graduate school, he typed Betty's law school papers in addition to doing his own neuroscience experiments. They were creatures of habit; they bought their house in Newton in 1978 and never moved. For over 40 years, they were a fixture on Centre Street, as they walked to Newton Centre, to grab an ice cream or just to chat. Despite not being much of a traveler, Harry was a good sport about the many exotic trips the family took, and he looked back on them with joy. His happy place, however, was their vacation home on Cape Cod, where he and Betty enjoyed taking long rides on their e-bikes and hosting family and friends for dinner. Harry was a devoted father. He took tremendous pride in his daughters, Julie and Carrie, and was always thinking of them. If he heard about a possible ailment or car problem they were having, he would call (or show up) at any hour of the day or night to help. He showed great interest in their work as a pediatrician and psychologist and loved talking with them about patient care. He doted on his four grandchildren, Luc, Olivia, Ross and Miles, and spent time with them weekly, reading, playing on the floor, and driving them to activities. Harry worked as a primary care internist for 37 years in Framingham, most recently at Tufts MetroWest Medical Center. He was described by his colleagues as "a legend" and a "gifted clinician" who was "kind and decent to the people he touched." Many of his patients said he was the best doctor they ever had and that he saved lives on multiple occasions. He gave out his personal cell phone number to patients so they could reach him whenever needed, and he was known to work over the weekend, even when he wasn't on call. Harry loved cars and sailing, passions that were passed onto him by his father. He had fond memories of piling into his mother's Corvette with his siblings to go to Old Orchard beach. He could identify any model of classic car and loved to test drive cars even when he wasn't planning to buy. Harry's childhood sailing trips with his father were deeply meaningful to him, and he carried on this tradition with his daughters and grandchildren. He was an elegant skier, and he was happy that his daughters and grandchildren enjoyed the sport too. Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, June 4, at 2:00, at Levine Chapels, in BROOKLINE, with a private interment for family to follow. Shiva will take place on Sunday, June 4, from 6:30-8:00, Monday, June 5, from 4:00-6:00, and Tuesday, June 6, from 7:00-9:00 at the family homes. Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

I knew Harry not as a patient or friend, but only through my dear friend, his sister. Jackie. She adored her brother, and some of him often. He was always the kind and thoughtful support she needed, free with his medical and emotional wisdom, the kind of sibling we all wish we had. His generosity of spirit lives on in the Potter family, strong enough to live on without him, though the pain of his absence will be constant, a reminder to cherish the remarkable people in our lives while they are among us.

What the world loses..God benefits. Harry will be missed by so many people. He was a great doctor ..yet an even better person. As his patient for over 35 years he was not Dr. Potter. He was Harry.

Allan Schmaltz in Natick

June 17, 2023

My name is Allan Schmaltz. I have been a patient of Dr Potter's since 2000. I was lucky to be assigned to Dr Potter when I started going to see a doctor on a regular basis. Dr Potter was the best! The doctor who cared. I find it hard to believe he has left us. I am 7 weeks older than the doc. After reading Dr Potter's family history, I find it goes with my thoughts of a loving type person he was. My health is good but I still have my issues that required seeing Dr Potter more often than I wished. He pointed me to all the right specialist type doctors when needed, who have kept my health as best can be had for a 72 year old. This world needs more people like Dr Potter. It sure would be a better place for all of us to live. I'm sorry to hear late of the doctor's passing. I last saw Dr Potter in late April. I never would have dreamed that would be the last time I would see him. I will miss the doctor who cared a lot about me. I never got to call him Harry. Good bye Harry.

Dr. Potter was the best doctor I´ve ever had. He was a caring human being. As my doctor and friend for 30 years, one could not find someone better. Three years ago I had a cardiac arrest. After spending nearly a year in various Boston hospitals and in a nursing home I was released and came home. I then saw Dr Potter. When he saw the reports on me he said, with his hand on my shoulder, " I´m so sorry for what you went through". His warmth touched me in more ways than I can say. He will be very missed.

Dr. Potter was my PCP for 25 years. He was such a wonderful doctor and person and was very thorough. He would leave no stone unturned with his diagnosis and analysis. It is shocking to learn that he is no more. I had met him just 15 days prior to his passing for my annual physical. He kept elaborate notes on history of ailments and talked about all of them during every visit. I too am one of his patients to whom he had given his personal phone number. I just learned about his passing via a letter from Tufts in the mail today. I am still in shock.
My heartfelt condolences to the entire family.
This kind and gentle person will be sorely missed.

Like many others, I was stunned and deeply saddened to hear that Dr. Potter had passed. He was my PCP for well over 20 years, and although we never met outside of his practice, I thought of him with great affection, as a kind person and meticulous professional, never stinting in his care. Please accept my sincerest condolences -

I was lucky to be a patient of Dr. Potter's for a long time, receiving several of those weekend calls that were so surprising to me. He was just taking care of business in his calm and reassuring way. What a kind and wonderful doctor he was. I'm saddened by the news and so sorry for his family, friends, coworkers and patients.

I knew "Harry" through my husband. My husband was a patient of Harry's since he started his practice in Framingham. He was a wonderful, thorough and caring doctor and my husband respected him and loved him. We both did. Harry went the extra lengths to help his patients and saw things through. My husband passed away just a year ago and when I called Harry to let him kinow, he was visibly upset. He cared, that's why he was upset. I was so upset when I learned of Harry's passing. We lost a wonderful person and a wonderful, caring doctor. There are no more doctors today who cared like Harry. Bless you Harry, you will be missed. I say this for myself and my husband.

I met my cousin Harry at a very late time in my life in his life to my great aunt Selma 15 years ago. He was always very nice with me, and I could tell that he was a sweetheart, caring and loving to everyone he came into contact with and especially his family. I´m sorry for your loss, he left way too early.

Dr.Potter was my PCP for about 30 years. He saved my life when I was so sick with Anaplasmosis (tick transmitted disease). He was extra thorough in everything he did. He was brilliant but humble. He would always pull up a chair and look at you with his full attention and ask "Tell me everything that´s going on with you today". He would scribble his to do list and hand it to me at the end of our appointment´s. Being a nurse I was not always the most compliant patient but Dr. Potter always had a way with words and somehow would make me do whatever he felt was needed. I´ve been driving from Northborough to Framingham for the past twenty years to see him because he was so worth the drive. His bedside manner was excellent. I just face timed with him on my birthday May 30th. I messaged him a day or so later and when I didn´t hear back I called his office to learn of his passing. He typically answered messages instantly. I can´t believe he´s gone. I would like to offer my condolences to all of his cherished family, friends and patients. He is unreplaceable and will be truly missed. RIP Dr.Potter xoxo

Harry Potter was the best doctor I ever had (for 25 years). He was always kind and very thoughtful and started each visit asking me if I had any concerns about my health, and if I had any concerns, he addressed each and every one. It's so hard to believe he has passed away and I am also surprised by some of the other connects we have had (growing up in Maine, living in Newton, UMass Boston and of course Framingham). The world is emptier without him. I will never forget the great human being and doctor he was.

Just heartbroken to have learned of his death. He was the best Dr. you could possibly have!! He was my Dr. for 30 years and made you feel so important!! Just a loving Dr and man!! One time my blood sugar was high and he wanted me to go to the hospital. I fought him at first and he said he would meet me there. He drove all the way from Newton to Framingham and spent an hour with me late at night!! He made you feeling special!! He will truly be missed
